Ok guys , I got my '89 back up and running. did a little 150 mile jaunt down the road and back as we say in Texas. My questions is what kind of mileage are yall getting? My 7.3 with 4.10 and 5 speed manages 14 at best. Ive heard these engines can do a lot better, but how???? is it possible?? Give your results and what you did to achieve your mileage claims! Got pictures of the old girl coming up soon!

I get 18.5 highway with the truck in my signature. I'm fairly certain of that number because the fuel sender is broken and only one tank works. I drove 7 hours on the interstate after buying it, filling up the front tank every 150 miles. Stock tire size so the speedo and odo should be accurate. I believe it has 4.10's but I haven't been able to check.

Speed and weight is a big factor.....

My Son was riding in a 90 F-Superduty IDI/E4OD and the driver was in a hurry and had it pinned to the governor, and in less than 50 miles it used a quarter tank of fuel..... now this is a ~15,000 pound truck, with 4.88 or 5.13 gears.....

91 ex. Cab 4wd e4od 4:10 gears 13-14 is the best I've ever seen in 3 years, and it has a turbo too. The guy I bought it from said he was getting 17 but I don't know how guess my foot is a lot hevier than his...

Pretty sure I calculated 17 on my trip back from Texas. Age of fuel system plays in too. Pretty sure my injectors are shot. The trip to VA in July I got about 15 highway. That was going 70-75mph so I can't complain with a crew cab dually with 4.10s

Best I’ve ever gotten in the shop truck was 23 heading to the coast. That was with a big kayak, Matco 6s full of tools, couple full coolers and luggage. Probably around 2500 lbs in the bed, cc set at 90. 3.55s zf5 and 33” tires.

Just regular parts running I’ll get 250 miles per tank

Mixed highway and town I consistently average 13-14 with 4.10s and 255/85/16(33") tires. I never baby the skinny pedal or miss an opportunity to wind out a gear!

Timing can make a difference as well. I have picked up a couple mpgs by advancing timing when needed.
My 6.9 with 4.10s and a 5 speed averages 15. that is with a 10 foot ****** box on the back.

I get 17mpg in the city, and 21mpg highway and keeping it under 60mph.

I had to do A LOT of mods to get my IDI to that level of efficiency. GVOD, Turbo, Axle Swap, Installed better turbine, high efficiency TC, alum driveshaft, lowest LRR tires, e-pump, 3g alt, frame rail filter heads, hi-flow exhaust and wrapped pipes, solar panels, WVO conversion, and so on.

I have a more detailed list of my projects for fuel economy here:
http://www.nickpisca.com/diesel/turbo/the-great-big-list-of-eco-mods-for-6-9-and-7-3-idi-vehicles/

The last section of the article has my plans for the future. Maybe I can get it up to 23 or 24 mpg. Who knows.

That’s impressive you got that with a C6. I bet with a lockup trans you could be in the mid to high 20s. That’s pretty crazy

got about 13-14 on the highway empty/light load in my 89 with na 7.3 e4od 3.73 gears - (I think)

I get 17.5 in my 96 psd zf5 with 4.10's

both numbers are through rolling hills in ga,cs,nc probabaly would be a little better in flat country

low teens is probably all you'll get without a turbo
