I'm in the Central Coast, Pismo Beach area. Same deal here when it comes to diesel mechanics and shops. I grew up in Long Beach and visit my mother there often, which is why I figure I might have better luck finding help there. How much do you think you would charge for a rebuild?

It would depend on a bunch of factors. I'm not really in the business of rebuilding engines, I just have a lot of experience with these IDI's over the last 6 years. And I have most of the required tools. When I was pricing rebuilds, most were charging over $3000-4000, hence the reason why I started doing this on my own.

That being said, I'm currently doing a build right now that needs to be done by April 1. After that, things open up a bit. If you are still interested in it, message me then and we can talk a bit.

Would you like some help? I'm in the area often and I'm sure there's plenty I can learn by giving you a hand.

Hey Nick, do you know of any credible engine rebuilders or machine shops?

I'm assuming you are in Los Angeles too. If yes, then you are kind of out of luck. Pretty much the main reason why I'm getting so good at working on these van IDIs is because I've got so little respect for the mechanics on the west side. But if you are out in the desert or close to the outskirts, then you might have better luck finding a diesel mechanic.

I pretty much do all my own mechanical work, but if i need something machined, honed, or balanced, i go to EMS in Inglewood. Best guys in the city, but they have a massive wait list so don't expect a quick turnaround for machining services. As for the rebuilding... I'm contemplating starting up a rebuild service just for IDIs in Los Angeles. Idk.

www.nickpisca.com/diesel I started up this blog for my IDI's that is kinda taking off now. I figure if I'm going to wrench on these beasts all the time, I might as well spread the knowledge.
