As others have mentioned, replace the pump only if needed, not just to have a new one. I was asked if I wanted to replace my pump when the engine machinist was on the phone with the parts guy and I said no. Heard too many horror stories of defective melling pumps and poor service when things to go wrong. My understanding is they do not make checks on all of their pumps and claim to only do random testing.
Not good enough for me.
I don't consider oil pumps to be wear parts and unless there has to be a pretty catostrophic failure, they will typically last at least as long as the life of the engine block itself.
