Hi idi Bob
Your my favorite dark cloud!!

I am looking for a experienced eye to let me know if I am wrong but the pictures don't show the fact that you can still see the faint marks from the tooth grinding process when they were manufactured.
The dark line is not there in real life but the contact is slightly lighter at the outside of the tooth on the drive side and slightly lighter at the inside of the tooth on the coast side.
Which is mirrors the fact that when I got the contact centered top tooth to bottom of tooth I could not bring them to both center across from one another with out going out of the Ford backlash specs.
So if you have the experiance I am quite willing to pay attention to your advise.

If you do the final drive calculation you will find that my first with the s47 transmission and my 4th gear are very close to first gear and 5th gear with the s42 transmission and the 4.10 gearing that you run
While I miss the closer ratios of the s42 in some instances, I will not be wearing out my clutch.
Cheers

As far as mpg with all the short trips I took while doing the break in I am still about 1 mpg better than with the 4.10 e4od setup that was in it.
I expect that it will only get better. Though I may not reach the milage that you get, most likely because I drive faster.

were you cruising hwy at 60 for most of those 500 miles? Curious on what rpms and mpg you were seeing

I only drove 40 mph at the start of the break in increasing my speed as I got farther into the break in period.
The truck runs at 1600 rpm at 60 mph
And on the gently rolling hills in my area drives easy and is much quieter then it was with the 4.10 gears.
I have not driven it at expressway speeds yet but expect it will do extremely well.
When my non turbo 1984 idi was on the road with the Dana 61 3.07 gears. "As built at the factory by FORD". I could drive at 80 mph on the expressway and never hold up traffic.
I find that if I had been able to find the 3.08 gears that fit the Sterling axle I would have prefered them over 3.31 gears that I managed to find.
But this for the way I use my truck and I know it will not work for every one.

But to give idi Bob his due when I'd converted my 84 from 4 speed to 5 speed I found 1st and reverse to be very fast and though I never wore out the clutch I felt it was ******* the clutch.
The s47 transmission changed that

I totally would have tried that, conditions permitting. I’ve actually done it once before, with dead batteries.
I'm convinced that these trucks can crank up better with a rolling start then any glow plug, ether, or power master can do. If I had a good enough hill, I'd park it at the top every evening and pop the clutch to get going in the morning.

I'm too old, fat, and grumpy for camping in the summer time. Hopefully, I'll get away this fall after it cools off some.

It is definitely really muggy here, but it is also quite breezy, so it evens out.
I really wanted to take my daughter out, can't argue with the three year old when she is demanding we go camping ❤️

So this is embarrassing... This showed up on my feed while my kids were practically perched on my shoulders (my 12 year old is 5ft 2 so this was painful haha). They didn't recognize it because in their living memory it's been in pieces in my shop

The 12 year old was 12 weeks old when I discovered all the rust

Haha I have a '93 Bronco that has been in pieces in my garage since the year before my 12 year old was born. So I know exactly where you are at. Once kids came, time and money became even more scarce. No money to pay someone to do it and no time to do it yourself. We will get to them someday!!

As you all know, I have zero projects and tons of free time and really needed something to keep myself busy. My brother just gave me his 00.muatang he's has since 01. It's been sitting since 2012.

Halfway up the ramps my winch gave out.

Then a thunder storm

Then it was suddenly 11pm

Someone with more than half a functioning brain cell would have pushed the car off trailer and come back another day.

But I have no such brain cell :idiot:

I just love towing **** with this truck haha
