Fuel Lift Pump Cam Lobe

I replaced the fuel lift pump on my ‘88 7.3 non turbo as preventive maintenance. I tried to re-install it several times the correct way and I don’t think I’m doing it right. I have no pressure at the fuel filter and nothing coming out of the line at all. Is there some sort of trick to this that I’m overlooking? I’ve researched and know that you need to put the arm in at an angle and under the cam lobe but that appears to be very difficult; tight space, hard to leverage the lift arm and get the pump bolts on at the same time. Very frustrated, I just feel like this is a very straightforward job but it’s holding me up. Thanks in advance for your time guys.

No trick. See image below of the fuel pump installed into a mostly disassembled block. The fuel pump arm goes on the bottom side of the cam.

You may have the wrong pump, or a pump that is not working. Take the pump out and operate the arm manually with your finger over the inlet port, you should be able to feel air sucking into pump.

Whenever I install a mechanical fuel pump I angle the arm down so it's installed under the eccentric. x2 on double checking your mechanical fuel pump. They've been known to be bad in-the-box. Once you get it installed make sure you keep an eye on your oil level to ensure the mechanical fuel pump doesn't start pumping diesel into your crankcase.
