I'm restoring and updating a '94 factory turbo dually. I'm at the point of freshening up the seals and gaskets and painting the engine. Upon inspection, I found a cam lobe going bad. Didn't plan on this but I now have an excuse to get the type4 "logger" cam. I've emailed Oregon Cams directly to see if I can get this cam reground.
There is also some surface rust on the cylinder bores as the truck sat for a couple of years before I got it. I pulled the pistons and checked cylinders with a bore gauge, and they are amazingly straight. Maybe .002 average taper on all cylinders. No real ridge at top,(can't catch your fingernail). Average bore diameter I got was like 4.112. So I would just like to re-ring, and do a light hone 320-400 grit, maybe a flex-hone. Also plan on studding it.
Now my issue/confusion is regarding these keystone rings. I definitely have two per piston with an oil ring. On Rock Auto they show Hastings, Mahle, and Enginetech. No where that I can find do they make reference to keystone, except Enginetech says rectangular, not keystone?! Are the others keystone rings? Can anyone confirm if I order a set, they will be keystone? Mahle is the only one I think who actually made the pistons for International So if I buy, it would be Mahle/Clevite ones. Do non-turbo 7.3's use keystone? Or is the "93-"94 factory turbo unique? Or does anyone have another source for these rings?
