Happy belated Thanksgiving.
Working on a skidsteer and pulled the leaking tilt cylinder. Is it a losing proposition with the pitting/scratches on piston and the interior of cylinder?
Sanded it with 1200 grit and some oil, but still feel it with fingernail. Thinking maybe a new cylinder is the smarter move than rebuilding. Not my area of expertise so any opinions are helpful.
I know this isn't IDI related, but hey I'm gonna tow it with a 1994 F350 IDI Turbo ultimately. And you guys are the best.

If it's got that kind of water in the system, it going to be all over.
But if the seal can cover the pit and not let the pressure go by you might be ok.
Hone it with a flat stone, just don't make it loose.

Hopefully you get more replies...

I'm not very smart on hydraulics things, but I feel like if you can still feel those scratches, you'd be better off with a new cylinder. A reseal might work for a while, but I feel like the scratches will wear your new seal prematurely.

Well......if you just want to squeeze a tindge more life out of it, you could probably clean the stew out of it, hone it a bit.....then clean it REALLY good, slick coat some jb weld, and then hone it again......just a thought, to buy you some time and save the seals a bit. New cylinders is still the superior option.

The really important question here is....

Does the truck or skid steer have a cupholder(s) ??

Just had to ask....

On the cylinder...if it were mine I would hone the thing starting with a medium grit and progressively go finer and use plenty of oil until it looks better. Same with the piston.

Yeah, it is a little bit of work but the finish will let the seal live longer. You will probably be O.K. The piston and seal will not spend the majority of its working life in that one spot. Especially if you are aware of it.

Good luck on it.

Take care,

X

Looks like the wear rings would reach the damaged portion even if the seal does reach you would only have internal leakage at the very top of the stroke. Reseal it. Also if you can match the seals online it will be a lot less then the kit. Do not worry about replacing the wear bands or the scratches on the piston.
