I plan on doing what you did with the engine but backed by an Eaton Fuller FSO6406 or 8406, a bit more work involved but it will hold up well behind the engine.
Are these transmissions all compatible with SAE #2 bellhousing? Thanks for the tip!FWIW, I was shopping for these recently. 5305/5306 is commonly used with the 5.9 cummins, and the 6306 shows up with DT466 and 7.2 Cats.
I ended up with a 6306 due to price and availability.
The Spicer 7 speeds (aka "6plus") are another one to look at.
