ive got a 460 ZF in my ranchero with an IDI, and altho i have 4.10's and dont tow, the 3-4 shift isnt the best.
my LUK clutch fries over when i hammer 4th.
make sure you put a good clutch in!

i mostly use this for offroad, so the 1st thru 3rd is perfect

I reckon the luk 11” clutch did everything I needed never slipped so I think the standard 12”.s will do be even better for my use

Hi in the Cascades, Nearly- Redmond,Oregon
So to make me understand correctly, the Gasser ZF5 I/we need in place of our diesel ZF5 needs to come from a gasser 460 ZF5? Or was there gasser ZF5s behind other gas engines sizes besides a 460?
I'm looking at a friend's rig he's thinking about parting out or fixing up, he's not sure yet.
If he parts out I may be able to get the gasser ZF5 with the BW1356 that's with it. I not sure what size gasser engine is in it, never thought to check.

Bessie, diesel CCLB Dually has 4:10 & the ZF5, plus the BW1356 that I put in when I put the Kingpin D60 under her & now 4x4.
Ever since she was new I've always disliked the 1st & reverse when loaded, & sometimes I've had her so overloaded it's unreal!!!

My understanding is the 460 and diesel bells can be modified slightly to fit the opposite engine.

If swapping gear clusters between transmission cases, then I believe you can use the ZF5 guts from any gas engine (i.e. 351W).

Beware of the non-compatible M5OD 5spd used in the F150 and some light 250s.

Edit: a BW1356 isn't terribly special. The 96+ tcases have a fixed rear yoke. Even the nv271 from a superduty bolts up.

The 351 zf5’s have an internal slave

Yes.

Yes they also came out behind 351W, 302, and 300-6 engines but you can't use those behind a 460 or IDI.

They have to be modified. The 460 uses 7/16" bolts while the IDI used 1/2" bolts for the bellhousing. From what I remember, the top two line up. The lower four have to be redrilled in slightly different locations. The good news is that every truck with a IDI in it has a pattern for drilling the holes. It's called an adapter plate.

One way to check whether you can swap gears from a small block ZF to a diesel one would be to look up parts for each and see if the part number is the same. I know you can’t swap guts from a s5-42 into a s5-47 or vice versa. I don’t know if the internal shafts are different on a 4x4 vs 4x2.

700$ 460 zf5 should be good all the things I want to see I saw to tell me it’s low miles even had paper work to prove it

Anyways bolt an adapter plate to it drill it out and from there just for all intensive purposes pretend it’s a diesel zf5? Diesel clutch fly wheel etc?

The flywheels can't interchange between a 460 and a IDI. The pressure plate never comes in contact with any part of the transmission unless there's something drastically wrong. I believe that the clutch, throw out bearing and the pilot bearings are the same, but you can do some research on that. From what I remember, the ZF5 and the T19 both use the same pilot bearings so I'm betting that it's the same.

Are you saying to use a 460 or idI fly wheel?

Use the IDI flywheel. I will caution you, the 12 in clutches work well, but your flywheel cover plate will probably hit the larger clutch. I think most people just leave it off, I have been running my truck for many years with no flywheel cover and it has never been a problem.

So start with drilling the top 2 holes bolt the plate on then drill the rest?
I was expecting the dowels to be the same but no hopefully I can do that precisely
