Looking for opinions here
I have a 2wd t-19 in my truck right now I just swapped in a Dana 60 and since I redid my turbo rolling at 75 even is over 10psi so it’s over drive and t case time

I have 3:55 gears and plan to keep them, I have the 5:1 t-19 and I love it especially the 5:1 first
Which drawers me to the wide ratio/ 460 zf5
The 4.1 first and reverse drives me nuts on the zf5’s
My concern is that on my t-19 the killer is the 3-4 gap it’s darn near 1500 rpm drop and towing especially up hill that kills me

So would just like to hear your opinions for those who have either trans behind their idis with 3.55’s

I had the lowest gear t19 behind a 7.3 in a truck I had years ago and loved it. Have a 460 zf to put into my truck because It has the 4:1 t19 now, and it sucks.

I have gasser gears in my zf5 and I like them. I have 4.10 gears, but also 35” tires so my final drive ratio might not be far from yours depending on your tire size. Second gear is lower which makes starting from second an option in many situations. I find third gear perfect for casually driving through subdivisions and places with a 25mph speed limit, whereas before with the s5-42 diesel gearset i felt like 3rd was slightly too high. The reverse gear is much better with the gasser gearset too. If this trans blew up I would probably take whatever I could find, but if I had the option at the same price I’d go with the wide ratio personally.

Mine is the high geared diesel ZF5. Other than the high first and reverse gears, I love it for cruising on the highway. If you find a 460 ZF5, I think that you'll LOVE it. If you tow really heavy, you can just keep it in 4th gear and you'll be no different than your are now at highway speeds.
I agree with you on the HUGE 3-4 gap on at least some of the t19s. that's terrible. The Chevy 6.2/6.5s with the 5 speed transmissions (whatever they're called) are awful to drive. They also have a 1500 RPM drop between gears, most of them from what I can remember. Unless someone's shifting at about 3500 RPM, that drops you clear out of the boost range with the stock 6.5 turbo set up. Those weren't even fun to drive empty.

May I ask how is your 3-4 shift?

The most noticeable gap to me is 2nd to 3rd, but it’s not terrible

NV4500. Same 5 speed from the Dodge trucks, 94-02. The 3rd to 4th drop really is terrible, same can be said with that transmission behind a Cummins

And the 12V doesn’t rev that high…

For your info, ALL Ford transfer cases will bolt up to ALL Ford 4wd transmissions. Except the 6 speed stuff won't fit. Your transfer case from the t19 should bolt right up to the zf.

If you do get another transfer case, try to get the shifter that comes with it. While all transfer cases bolt up to all transmissions, the shifters can be different, and you have to look out for the output style also. Some fixed yoke, some slip yoke.

I have a 1989 460 truck that I idi swapped with the ZF five and I believe 4.10s, the smaller gap compared to the t19 I had the idi in before is amazing.

I am NA and the ZF doesn’t have that giant gap in the 3-4 shift it’s very helpful when hauling.
