I see a thread regarding the diferences between the non turbo and factory turbo motors. My question is - Buying the turbo master kit ( with rotating assymbly) and installing in a pre turbo block would be equal to the factory turbo power plant? Blocks the same? And if so, can my turbo be reworked for the lower comp. turbo set up?

Where are you getting this turbo master kit from? I was under the impression that the turbo rods are NLA.

Anything is possible. If you have a Garrett turbo(which is what I believe ATS uses?), there are custom parts all over the place for them. Custom builders will do anything you want.

Custom parts for the Hitachi turbo, that Banks uses, are a little harder to find.

Truth be told, I have not looked yet. Was thinking about getting a core motor and start rebuilding it so I had one when I needed it. Mine is pushing 200k. I was not aware there could be aan availibility problem. In fact I would be surprised if the heavier duty stuff did not superseed pre turbo motors with the only diferences being the pistons. I priced a new factory rebuilt complete drop in turn key from the stealership, no core, 13k.
Years and years ago we made stuff work. We used to build chevy 292 straight sixes and used Ford tractor rods we had reworked. I dont hear much about beefing these motors up much other than pumps, injectors and turbos. No custom cam ginds? No trick manifolds? Anybody ever play with these motor internally?

Pardon my ignorance, but if one was looking for beefier rods w/ lower compressions couldn't you just get the rods out of the 94 powerstroke engine or maybe even a later model 7.3? Or is the crank/block that much different.

Hey magoo. I had my cam grinder put a different profileon the cam for the 7.3 I am building, I will let you know how it works out. It cost about 120 with shipping, A little more lift and duration I have the specs scribbled down somewhere.

6 myles, per f-two-fiddy, the rods may no longer be availible.

Im the type who is always trying to reinvent the wheel. Type 4 sounds like my kinda guy. What are the specs on your cam. Whos grinding it. I have been a schnider guy for many years but I degreed a Lunati once and was impressed. I think they use CNC for their stuff. Old school is get as close as you can to the card and be happy. The Lunati was the first cam I "ever" got perfect to the card and maintained over all lobes. For squeezing every fraction of HP its important but for daily drivers? Just cool to know you got what you think you got. I have a bunch of computer programs for running therotical power curves on different combos to help guide the build process. Never seen anything on the diesels. Local guy here holds the speed record for diesels (detroits) and even Detroit was very little help. He pioneered a bunch of stuff for them. With out computer controls on the IDI we need to expierement to get working combos. I am sure someone here has some expierence modifying these motors?

Did you look at Okie's link?

I think Ken at DPS is the only person who's actually done anything with the internals of an IDI...he's probably the best one to talk to. ;Sweet

Make dang sure you spin it over by hand before you fire it. These engines are allready pretty tight between the valves/pistons. Theres not much room for more lift.

Rebuilt turbo rods (the big pin type) can be bought from Peck Road Ford in Whittier Ca. About $50.00 plus a $27.00 core if you don't have a set to turn in like me. Nobody makes a set anymore. The powerstroke rods are the same length and both pin and crank jornels are the same as the idi but... The crank end is about .130 wider and wont fit. I can grind it to fit but the rod bolt size makes things really thin so thats not going to work. Ken at DPS had someone build him a forged set for about $2900.00 I'm told. I do have a set of forged powerstroke rods and would think they may work with grinding the crank and rods but thats a long ways off right now. Somehow I need about .250 to make them fit. And gee.... IDI turbo rods fit without any machining.

Canfixall, 50 plus core sounds good by comparison. Maybe I should be looking for a good 94 core to play with. With the increase in diesel I am starting to see these trucks reasonably available.

The problem with buying a "turbo" block motor is you really don't know if it has the turbo rods or valves in the head. These motors can all look the same but its not until you have pulled the motor apart that you can tell for sure what you have. Even then its hard to know what valves you have. Usually if they have a dimples in the head of the valve and they are not magnetic you usually have the turbo valves.
