Absolutely change oil afterwards.

This job can be much cleaner if you take off the oil filter, and loosen the header bolts enough for oil and coolant to drain out the back header. I usually let them drain over night.

That sounds a lot smarter than just ripping the thing off the side of the engine. Sure wish I would have thought of that.

.....most....of the time it can be done pretty cleanly this way. Sometimes I still fail though.
Dont do many idi trucks any more, but pretty regularly doing 7.3 ps oil coolers.

Note on the 7.3 powerstroke coolers, the front header is held to the timing cover with two bolts. Be careful with that upper bolt boss. Had one break recently. Engine has to come out to replace timing cover......
