Take it up a steep hill and see how it goes. If it's a haze, you're ok. If you're cropdusting, it's more than timing. Do the compression and leak down test.

Decent timing light for these trucks? I'm sure it's much cheaper for me to do it and probably not too hard...

This is the one I bought. I believe I offered $180 and he accepted it right away. It’s got everything you need and works well. I did spend a little bit of time with a file and some emery cloth to get the magnetic pickup going into the hole easier.

The probe itself was actually oversized a bit (about .005” - .010” over 5/16” iirc). I had a spare front cover on the bench to play with too, and with the hole perfectly clean, it wasn’t going in. That’s when I decided to start measuring. I figure the tolerances on the Detroit’s these meters were meant for were pretty loose and it wasn’t an issue. In reality it may be a 8mm vs 5/16” thing.i keep a drill bit for that very thing.
run it in by hand, makes it pretty easy

They come with the pickup that clamps onto the injector line. The DTI timers are luminosity probe only, aren't they? Do they have a pulse pickup which clamps on to an injector hardline?
Whether it's actually the cause of the issue it's been good to learn about it.

Conestoga diesel will rent u the timing light and the pulse meter.... u want to adjust the timing to 8.5 degrees....Whether it's actually the cause of the issue it's been good to learn about it.
