Lost another set of ZD-1's today. This set was on manual control, 12v. They lasted about 5 months, 1 start per day. 7 seconds on, 4 off and another 4 seconds on. My oldest set of zd1's are also on manual control, exactly the same way, they have about 150k on them and 10 years. still working fine.

Ordered a set of 80034 and 60G's. Going to start experimenting with them also. did the 80034 spades fit ok into the 6.9 female harness plugs?

I have always soldered on connectors, didnt like the way the wide 6.9 connector fit the much narrower terminal. For awhile I was able to get connectors for the 6.2-6.5.......fit right.

The one thing I should mention with the 80034 is that the terminal can break off somewhat easily if you are trying to bend them for any reason.

I just used what ever the common spade terminal on them. The 6.9 harness should plug right into them. Mine have been just amazing so far when its cold I glow for 15-20 seconds then continue glowing while I crank fires right up

the nice thing about the 80034 or the 60g is that you can glow them as long as you want or need to.

I have had both in 6.2 and 6.5 motors that a 30-45 second glow would make them start at basically any temp.

Let me know how it goes. I'll put my electric lift pump in off a 6.5 chevy and report back how that does
I have an electric lift pump in line with the stock lift pump. If the lift pump fails, the electric one will keep the engine running but at reduced power, probably cuz I power it from the old coil wire at about 8 volts. It's good for priming to the factory filter schrader valve, which is the last in line before the IP. I can't recall which is first from the tank, but both feed thru the Racor F/W separator before going to the factory filter. I also use two 6 volt batteries and feed my GP's manually from one of them thru a 12 volt activated stock relay/solenoid. I covered this a couple weeks ago. You can see the electric pump, F/W separator, and relay in the photo with the 2 red wires going to the stock original 1986 harness. All this **** has been in service for a very long time. I can't even remember the last time I replaced GP's, but that's prolly cuz of old timers....I did have to replace on of the batteries last week though. They were both dated 2012. Now it load tested great again.

Tested an 80034 today and a ZD-1. Both new. Both on the same battery with the same charger on it.

The 80034 was still glowing strong after 18min. That's when I stopped. Will give it another several long glows over the next days
The ZD-1, hooked to the same battery (although a 6v plug, as we know; but some of us do or have had them on manual 12v control), lasted about 2 min until it melted and burnt out.

I don't know if I'll ever disembark from the "ZD9 only and all else is heresy" bandwagon, but I do appreciate you doing all this real life testing and R&D and sharing your findings with us. It's very interesting stuff and i can't wait to see the long term results. Who knows, keep up the good work and you just might convert a devout preacher of the IDI gospel!

If people didn't start experimenting we'd still be stuck with 200hp max IDIs. It is safe going tried and true, but sometimes a better option is around the corner. Your logic is solid for the automatic glow plug controller, but with manual glowing it's looking like we have some options.

I had good luck with bosch zd9s back in the day, they glow hot and fast, but too hot for long glows so they were sensitive to overglowing; most likely another 6v plug.

The motorcraft beru take at least twice as long to get enough heat to start in my guesstimate/ recollection. Next time I do plugs I'll probably try these 80034s, bosch is usually a solid company from what I've heard. If they can reliably take the abuse they might work well with the controller too. I'm not sure how smart the controllers are, if they use GP resistance or what.

I will be surprised if you get that 80034 to burn out. I have not seen a failed one yet.

Bosch never made a zd9....do you mean the bosch plug for the 7.3 application?

I dont know of anybody that has tried to run the factory controller with the 80034, they are much slower to heat. Probably too slow even if the controller functions correctly with them.

Yeah bullet connector bosch, they weren't spade or 80034 though.

How long does it take you guys to start?

Yeah the bullet connector Bosch (whatever the part number is) for the 7.3's have not lasted too long for me. I have never installed any new, but have purchased trucks that have recently had them installed. Didn't take long for them to burn out. None were swollen or anything tho

They heat up FAST, so the controller will kill them pretty quick.

My tired old engine before would start in 5-7 seconds, and it was in bad shape. I can only imagine the new engine would be even better.

The controller does sense resistance. The 60G plugs take less amperage so the 7.3 controller does not glow the 60g plugs for more than like 2 seconds that's why I added a button override to my controller

I probably won't use anything but ZD9s in my trucks as well, but I do think it's great to have other options. I am a big believer in manual GPs and I agree that the ZD9s do take a little time to heat up, but once they do it's no problem. FWIW, when I first started using the manual GPs, I was looking into using the bosch plug, but I was hearing too many horror stories about them swelling and/or breaking off, so I just stayed with the ZD9s.
