Oh crap. The thing I'm calling the relay is the old controller? I thought this controlled power to the controller that was the tall cylinderical thing that used to be in the back of the block (that I thought was the controller). That's hilarious if I don't have it right. So the new solid state controller should have the two brown leads that connect to it coming from same side of the relay as the red cable - or connect to battery power at all times? It doesn't got though the "relay"?

I was wondering why the "relay" had two control signals.... Looking over the schematic, straight from the battery to the glow plug controller. That "relay" comes out? It's part of the old system? Is the purple wire the old wait to start light?

Nope. You were right. I'm not a fan of any of the 6.9 style controllers. I know that the solid state controllers are better than the old style, but I don't like them either. I always recommend manual control for those. The 7.3 style has the relay and the controller together. I think that our confusion was where you said that you "retrofitted" a solid state controller in your first post. That sounds like you changed over to a 7.3 style controller to me.

The Purple wire on the 6.9 Fender relay, is what sends power to the relay to click it on, to heat the GP`s.
Don`t think that wire has anything to do with your new system.

Looking at your picture.
Does that big Red wire come from the battery?
Does the wires off the other big side go to your GP Harness?
That should be the fuseable wires going to the Big plug going to the GP harness.
That is the way the 6.9 is wired up.

What GP Harness are you using?
Are you using the 6.9 Harness?
Did you change it to a 7.3 GP Harness?

Did you change the GP`s?
6.9 uses the ZD-1, new# is ZD-28, Spade connector.
7.3 uses the ZD-9, new # is ZD-29, Bullet connector.

From what I remember reading the ZD-1 heat at 12V,
and the ZD-9 at 6V. or the other way around.
I haven`t messed with the 7.3 style GP Relay.

Kind of sound to me you have both relay systems wired together?

Yup. That's exactly what I did thinking it was a lot better than the old style.

I changed it over. I have new style controller, new style plugs, new style wiring harness on the top of the engine, mated to new style connector with wires from old harness spliced in. I think I have the mating...

Red wire comes from battery (indirectly from starter relay). The two wires off the other side went to the glow plug controller (I think this is my problem) Will move them from the relay to battery power and remove the extra relay. The wires to the (new) controller are fused.

I need to double check the connection to the blue wire. Its a thin wire going to a thick one - and that seems like a fire waiting to happen. Also, I need to find the wait to start in the old harness. Pretty sure that's not hooked up right either.

Worked like a charm. Even found the black /purple glow plug light wire. Light doesn't lite, but maybe bulb is burnt out.
