Do we have a "tried and true" mechanical lift pump brand for these engines?
So many of us are tired of our Facets that cant keep up, but we could still use them to prime for starting (among other things) if we are smart about it and got back to a mechanical pump.

All we need is a few check valves and hose to route the facet past the lift pump and then it's no issue if the diaphragm ruptures, but I'm wondering if there is a best quality lift pump out there like the Motorcraft thermostat or Beru glow plugs.

Thanks guys!

Edit: perhaps a lift pump rated at 5-6psi instead of the 3-4 most of them push? Since all stanadyne IPs are calibrated at 6 psi it would make the most sense to run that.

Sure seems like some of the old tried and true brands are not holding up as they used to. The last two carter mechanicals I have installed, lasted about 30-50,000miles till they started to leak or loose prime

carter is the way to go for newer ones, sounds like they are still not as good as they should be but stay away from airtex.

i have heard of guys scavenging old engines to get the original factory lift pumps. they claim they are the best.

Mine has factory pump, newer that PO installed, along with a small facet cube pump, back on the frame, not sure why, PO did run some kind of waste oil in rear 30 gal tank, FSV doesn't work so assumed plug up and PO added cube pump, been ok for 12k miles so far.

it sounds like a good idea unless the mechanical pump diaphragm fails. then the electric pump can fill your crankcase full of diesel.

+1 on that, which is why I mentioned the check valves and hose earlier. It just takes extra hose and one check valve to fix that issue though. The facet needs to be plumbed into the pressure side of the lift pump and one check valve between the lift pump and the Tee from the Facet would allow you to run both pumps.
I used to run the Facet only on the cold-start circuit so key on engine off would prime the system with a cold engine. The reason I deleted the lift pump in the first place was to keep from filling my engine with diesel if the diaphragm ever ruptured.

Thanx guys
Josh good ideas all thru your post, as others have mentioned filling the eng. Up I bought into the untested hype and threw on this garbage...
Gunna hope to find a decent parts store to git a check valve and stock pump.

Keep the ideas coming

Would the idi community be interested in a modified “hot rod” version of the mechanical lift pump if I put one out there? Personally I prefer the benefits of going all electric but I know there’s plenty of guys who would rather keep their truck all mechanical.

I would be interested in this concept. I have no desire to switch to an electric pump.

I'm not in the hot rodders group, but if you had some way of getting good and reliable mechanical fuel pumps I'd be all over it. I'm still running my original lift pump at 322k miles, who knows how much life this thing has left in it. I want to replace it, but I've lost the new part lottery so many times that I just don't want to deal with it until I have to LOL
