What Oil Do You Use?

I run Rotella full synthetic 5W-40 and a FL1995, only uses about 1 qt between 3000-3500 intervals.

Next time I'm going to try Valvoline full synthetic

same here hauling heavy with a 8k lb empty truck.1 quart every 3k miles.
was the exact same with dino too.
so i add about 3 quarts per oil change interval,which probably helps a little keep it fresher.
im gunna send in a sample this time (only on my second synthetic change now) to see how she is really doing.about 9200 miles right now on this one.im probably changing twice as soon as needed lol.

I used rotella 15-40 till I started researching synthetics. I am flushing the new truck out after 3000 and trying royal purple. I have read several reports on it in diesels 7.3s and 6.9s with 10;000 miles on em and the oil was still as good as the day they put it in. It's also easier on the starting system even in cold weather, I live in Mt. and we almost always drop below zero in the winter.

I use Mobil Delvac 1300. The truck will leak Delo 400 out of the passenger valve cover almost immediately after a change. The Mobil does not get consumed as fast nor does it leak.

I usually dump a quart of ATF into the crankcase a few hundred miles before changing the oil. Seemed to work good on my 302.

Usually the Supertech from Walmart. If the Canadian tire "Motomaster" brand is on sale, I will pop that into her. I ALWAYS use Z max on EVERY second oil change....always have since I bought her and always will. She gets either a Fram PSD filter, I know....flame away....or a Baldwin filter, also a PSD filter.

Recently, I bought 5 gallons of Rotella T. People say it's watery and gets comsumed fast. I will say this, I DID notice a 5 psi drop in my oil pressure when hot AND cold. It may be the Rotella, it may be my oil pump or it may be my gauge. When i run out of Rotella and go back to more frugal brands, we will know if it was the oil or not.

I don't know why I use the cheap oil. I mean I always thought oil was oil. I know some claim to be better, I know some ARE better....but by how much and at what cost?

When someone comes up with hardcore evidence that cheap oil caused a catastrophic failure of an engine, then I will consider higher costing brands...but I haven't heard of an enigne blowing up because someone ran Supertech for the first time after running Delo all it's life....kinda like saying a diesel will become addicted to ether

I would be very careful about changing to Royal purole on an older engine. I lost a 100,000 mile engine after changing to Rpyal Purple. Royal purple told me that my engine was going through a "clean out because it started to use oil as soon as I changed -bcause it has more solvents than dino" They even gave me several gallons because of the extra oil consumption .I still have most of that oil. Anywho when the engine went it was torn down and they found 1 pistion oli spray tube clogged "that piston was toast". I think it was clogged by some sludge loosened by the synthetic. If I was going to change to synthetic again ,I think I would use motor RX.

By the way I threw some motor RX in my case300 this spring because #1 cyl is so bad it would go through a couple spark plugs a day.Now I can go a month on a plug and a gallon of oil . Its gotta last till my work on the property is done for the winter. Getting close & I'm a long way from being ready for a freeze. Then I hope to resleeve it & throw some bearings and seals at it. The head has less than a hundred hrs on it so it should be good.

That would suck. I wonder ....is there a way to blow out those oil lines so I know I will be ok? is there a way to guarantte that doesn;t happen??

I run the oil about 8000 miles now usually and when I sent the oil samples to Blackstone they say the oil with 8,000 miles on it and the dual bypass filter looks nicer than the oil that I used to run for 3,000 miles. My last iron was 18 PPM, the universal average on oil with 3,700 miles in the 7.3L is 60ppm.

Even before I started using the bypass filter I've never seen any sludge in my engine. After tearing the engine down after 150,000 plus miles everything in the valve train was super clean, no sludge, that was all with Rotella T. Only sludge I had was from the damn coolant leaking into the oil.

One time I accidentally flushed my oil by leaving the amsoil filter connector thing loose and driving down the road. The oil stayed real nice looking for a while that time :O

I'm using a recycled oil

Menards carries it (can't remember the brand name, black bottle, plain label) for $1.99/qt

I'll post the brand after I check it tomorrow, but so far this truck's only gone through about 1/2qt in 2700 miles

I bought it a month ago when they had a rebate on their oils, $1/qt with no limit, I bought 80qts in once shot

...I LOVE diesel smoke in the morning with my coffee!

When I first bought the truck, and the GP system was shot I started it on ether for over a year.....everyone told me (that thing will ALWAYS need ether to start now....it's addicted to it!).....she's been running for the last 2 years on it's own GP's......I can't see how something mechanical can become addicted to an aerosol.....but then again I said the same thing about me and diesel engines
