What Oil Do You Use?

If I were you guys pushing oil changes passed 5000 miles, I would defiantly do oil samples. 10000 miles is pretty high even with synthetic.

Not saying they won't do it, just saying be safe about and know the limits.

I work with a guy that takes his to the local Caterpillar dealer- he says that they are less expensive and higher quality. I've been meaning to stop on my way home from work and get some sample bottles, but I haven't done it yet.

Running Rotella T 15-40W in all 3 of my trucks. Also starting using the PS filter. I also had 3 motorcycles. In doing research for oil for the motorcycles, I found the Rotella T was highly recommended. The trucks use some oil, but I thought that was normal, especially for the high milers.

Around the farm, we use Rotella in every diesel we own honestly. In fact, our John Deere 2420 swather just had a major overhaul done about a month ago. Just shy of 11,000 hours on it before a coolant sleeve seal gave out in #3. It still ran like a champ when it was pulled to be rebuilt though!
After the rebuild, we broke it in and changed filters before I swathed with it for a couple of weeks. It has yet to use a drop of oil nor has it even started to discolor yet. Clean as the day we poured it in the case.

As far as trucks, both the PSD and IDI get the same oil and FL1995 filters. When I changed the PSD oil yesterday, the oil was just starting to turn dark. Never used a drop.

The IDI however is another story. Ever since I had a friend's shop replace my valve seals, I have had to add at least a quart between oil changes. Although, it still turned the oil black within a day even before the seals were ever touched. Not the truck's fault though really on that front. Unfortunately, it has to wait until all of our hay is off the ground before I can crawl back under the hood...

On the front of improved filtration, I have heard quite a bit of praise about Fleetguard filters. Especially this one for IDI and PSDs alike:

I can't find much information online other than rumors, but I'm told you can call their hotline for the filter specifications. I may be looking into that unless I can continue to get the FL1995 for under $10...

Now this is what I don't understand. The 6.9's were designed to use oil. But people claim to have a 6.9 so tight, that it won't sue a drop between oil changes.

I know it sounds like a big pile of BS, but my engine has almost 323xxx MILES on her, and with the cheapo oil, she would take the oil from the top of the full mark on the stick to MAYBE 1/4" down over 3000 miles. This is a 7.3 though.

What are NORMAL consumption rates for a 6.9 and a 7.3? Assuming that we use an oil that won't comsume at a high rate.

Myself, I used to run Castrol Tection - nothing else.

Then, I switched to Motorcraft because I change my oil & filter
every (2) weeks sometimes & I stop at Walmart where it is
$16 something in a 5 quart bottle.

Every other month O'Reilly's has a feature diesel oil @ $9.99 gallon
and I will get that.

I change my filter every oil change - I use Motorcraft.

I run Rotella full synthetic 5W-40 and a FL1995, only uses about 1 qt between 3000-3500 intervals.

Next time I'm going to try Valvoline full synthetic

I just thought of something else to ask. How many of you swap out JUST the filter between your oil changes? Whether it's just to do it, or to stretch out the oil a bit longer.

I am not going to argue all the points on oil additives.....but I know this much. I have had my hands in a fair number of engines before. Lots were sludged up on the valvetrain BIG time. I used to have a little visible sludge in my oil fill cap when I FIRST bought the truck in 2009. I started reading on Zmax and how it cleans this trash out and soaks into the metal as a super lubricator.

I cut open one filter after using Zmax and it was FULL of crap....I mean it was pretty bad. Then I read up on how certain flushes will break off large chunks of carbon and destroy oil pumps and other vital oiling ports. I got worried that it might happen to me with what I had seen in my filter.

Nothing bad came of my engine. I cut open a filter a couple oil changes ago...2 years later since I FIRST started using it and it had FAR less stuff inside than my second oil change I ever did on her. The sludge is gone from the oil cap and down inside the timing cover and I got rid of a little valve noise all the while.

Does it work? I think so. Can I prove it it? I am not a scientest. Would I recomend it? Hells ya!! It seems to do what I claims with no ill effects after 3 years of use.

I can agree with that Justin...my old engine was eating almost a gallon of rotella a week. That got old (and expensive) fast!

Goofy, I'll have to look into it. This new engine is extremely clean and I'd like to keep it that way.

That's what I noticed also in my '86 E-350. One quarter every 3,000 miles, that's why I don't add anything because by the time it ate that quarter I'm already changing the oil.
