You have enough cylinders that have enough compression that it sould be showing some signs of life...
Personally, with $1100 into it, I would pull the pump & housing to get the timing gears lined up. Check the articles. My last '85 I acquired for $250 had the same type problem from my teen hurry-up 'Git-Er-Done' nephew mechanics. 180 out & would almost run after ether. Yours is probably a few teeth off with valves barely open & not hitting the pistons, causing no compression.
