I'll take your advice on the firewall, and yeah I'd like to upgrade the turbo, the only thing making me hesitate is that it is a fresh rebuild, absolutely no free play on the shaft and the turbine wheel is new. How much you think I could sell the factory one for. Friday I go back on 7/12s for 30 days, so I'll be ordering parts all month lmao, i plan on buying the 50hp nozzles and rebuild kit, sending the hpop off for a 17* mod, a 2 piece 3" dp, zf5 rebuild with synchros, and main and rod bearings. What's your thoughts?

the TP-38's eah, i wouldnt buy one for more than 200.
if it was in immaculate shape.
but then again, i have 4 of them...
you know the 15* and the 17* HPOP are directly interchangeable, right?
just buy one.
what IDM mod?
you mean replace it, or put it on a laptop and mess with the internals?
if youre going to spend money on injecters, go the biggest you can, and tune it down.
thats whats great abiout these powerstrokes.
with the DP, my MANchero is getting a 4" DP, and since i gotta make a firewall, i wont have an issue.

my 87 has a 3" dp all the way to the frame level, with 4.5" to before the rear tire.

if youre going to rebuild it, id say youre going to spend some coin.

good luck at work!

we went on a boat ride and killed a 12 pack. ;Sweet

I wanna upgrade to the 17* ball bearing, and the 110v to 140v mod. I can get 50 or 100hp nozzles in a rebuild kit, that's something I can do, I just can't do any machine work. I figure 650 and rebuild what I have with bigger nozzles instead of buying the $3000 injectors, wife might have a fit. My work car totalled out, bought it new, only had 25k on the ticker, back to shopping for a work car. I ordered the 2 piece stainless 3" dp.
I wouldn't mind rebuilding with new rods, but they want a war price for those super nice forged rods lol. My plan is to check the bore and at the least just put new bearings in it.
Sweet on the boat ride man.

Just bought a used gtp38 for 180 off of ebay, once I get it I'll be putting my tp38 on there to get my money back.

You're gonna need a new pedestal.

Are the pedestals different?

Also, I didn't realize what years were what, but I read that the obs powerstroke has forged rods while around Oct of 99 or maybe 00 is when they swapped to the powdered metal rods. But anyways, the important thing was that my motor has forged rods factory. Correct? that's a happy moment for me if so. Lol

much debate on the date of PMR rods. but i believe it was mid 01 that was changed.

i think my SD has PMR rods, im not tearing it apart to find out lol
this is one of the reasons i dont want a programmer on it

yes the pedestals are different.
the GTP 38 bolts together from the top, the tp-38 bolts from the bottom of the pedestal.

there as cheap as the turbo you bought.
nice score on that btw.

is it a late or early GTP38?

Thanks for the info, I would have been tore up when I went to put it together lol. Not sure, the description was pretty generic. Said was a good used one, but I'm gonna buy the upgraded rebuild kit along with a banks compressor wheel. I'll upload a couple pics of it.

unless you know what your doing on these turbos, i would advise aginst just slapping a new wheel on.
these things spin at a crazy rpm, if it comes apart, where does the wheels go?
in my SD, i bought a center section with a billet comp wheel from pure turbos
my IDI, i had a member here rebuild a core i bought with a WW2
ive been wrenching for along time,
there are 2 things i wont f' with...
automatic transmissions, and turbo bearings lol

Lol, I know what you mean, I've done a couple turbos, one idi and one early 99, rebuilt a 4l60e out of a 01 s10 v6 and a 700r4 out of my old 85 z28. still learning something new everyday though. I don't worry so much about balancing a wheel to the shaft, as long as they are both balanced on center, in my book, I'm happy lol.
