How much money, time and effort are you prepared to spend here? As you will find, IDIs are not cheap to build even stock, let alone significantly modified... "Speed costs money, son. How fast do you want to go?"

I ask because you're looking at a used factory turbo kit, which hints that your budget is not unlimited... the gang here will have lots of ideas while we're spending YOUR money ;)

I got a factory turbo setup and Banks downpipe, and bolted it onto my 7.3 NA with rebuilt heads, to get started. Now I have a Classic Diesel Designs replacement with upgraded wheel ($900 plus core). Once I work out that %^&* leaky slip joint, I'm sure it will work great. So I'm into it for basically ~$1800.

That's at 11 psi max boost, since I didn't spend the significant extra money for head studs which are also a PITA to install with the engine in the truck, and it makes enough power for me.

SO be honest - what do you want to haul, and how much to spend?
Im looking for modest power, nothing big. No heavy hauling, just the occasional dump trailer load for landscaping and building material.

I was considering just buying the full banks kit for $3500 but I need to save up a long time for that route.

This factory turbo kit would be $950+$775 rebuild from Russ+ $80 install kit+ $100 Downpipe + $300 for extra margin = $2200 and i begin to think that the banks complete kit is a no-headache deal

There is also the CDD stage 1 kit for $2750

I am building my turbo set up similar to grusome2some on youtube minus the turbo rods,I have a old banks system. Thought about rebuilding it, but the cost of rebuilding versus upgrading to a more modern turbo system.
Lookup "grusome2some" on youtube

You get a full exhaust with that. Think about how much to ship that too. if you stay pretty much stock you won't have to stud. But Def think about the pump and injectors first if they haven't been replaced yet. That's the first thing, then turbo. I pull a dump trailer too and you Def want a turbo. But start in the most important place first.

Do you have 3.55 or 4.10 gears? How much hauling vs how much highway driving? And at what speed do you wanna highway drive (65 or 75)

I only ask cause you mention trans, is your ultimate goal a ZF-5 or E4 or C6/GV combo with your rear gears.

I’m wondering if I should just buy a 90cc pump and injectors for around $1500 and drive it first before buying the turbo.

The truck takes a bit to start and I don’t know the age of the pump or injectors currently on it.

I guess I should start thinking about getting some turbo pistons to lower the compression.

And maybe get the block sleeved or reinforced in some way

I can tell you from experience. You will gain more running a turbo on a stock pump than running a bigger pump NA. Well unless you want black smoke. You'll definitely be well ahead in the smoke department NA.

My .02. Get a new pump, matched injectors and turbo all together before proceeding. Install the injectors and pump at the same time. Run it enough to make sure your return lines aren't leaking (Replace these or at least the seals too) and the IP is good, then install the turbo. Get it timed either yourself or if you have someone local who can. Enjoy.

My truck is running stock pump turned up, and stock injectors, that are factory from when the engine was made back in '88, only 93k on them. I put a stock ats kit on it.

My dad's truck has turbo injectors and pump on it turned down with no turbo.

My truck outperforms his.

You may be a fan of the IDI platform, but for not much more money than a Banks kit, you can go the extra mile with a Cummins swap.I’m a Dodge guy at heart (yes sad but true), and I think 12 valves are a bit better than the IDIs for longevity, and they have WAY more power potential. I am considering the swap myself… but then I would no longer have an IDI. I like the IDIs well enough that I would like to have at least 1 around though. I’m still thinking on it. But the cost difference just makes sense to me. I also have the tools and place necessary to swap in a Cummins. Your mileage may vary
