Another easy way of checking the ratio is with a piece of string about 3" long. Tape one end of the string to the driveshaft, at a point 90 degree to perpendicular. Drive forward one revolution of the tires. Gather the string on the driveshaft in one spot and count the number of wraps. Easy to do alone.

well, they are 3.55's
ring and pinion teeth count is 39 and 11. which figures to be 3.55
ring gear also has 3.55 and a ford part number on it.

on a good note, the gears look pristine with no wear (and I mean none) after 155k miles.
only thing is when I pushed the wheel from forward to reverse there was a mild clunk as the gears met. is there supposed to be a little play?

guess either my speedo is off or my converter is slipping mucho.
thanks for the help and opinions.

Should be good for 5 or 600,000 more miles before any maintenance other than lubricant changes.

When the clunk turns into a grinding whine with a hint of a ringing noise, then more serious investigation might be necessary.
