Have you looked at the shifter position for the ZF in the trans tunnel? In our 71 we are gonna have to make a cover for the factory position for the 3 speed and cut a hole further back in the tunnel, just don't know where yet.

When I had them sitting where I thought they should go, the shifter was about 3" further back than my 4 speed, no big deal. I have an automatic 4x4 cover that I am going to cut a new hole in.

Got new parts and got her all back together. Return lines, water pump, gaskets, and paint.

my question to you is,
what method did you use to ensure that you got the IP gear on the marks with the timing gear cover on?

I marked the cam gear tooth with white paint just over the edge of the tooth, and did the same to the IP gear and shined a light on it and I was blind the last 1/2 inch but I am pretty sure that I am within a tooth. We will see, it seemed right.

I got a lot done today. I cut adaptors to weld to my to my frame and idi engine mounts, and got them welded on temporarily. I got the transfer case freed up by tapping the input and filling it with gear oil. Starting to look like something! What do you do for the clutch? Should I do hydraulic or make new linkages for it and try to do manual.

Was the truck originally a manual trans? If it was I would see how it all lines up under the truck, if the boss on the bellhousing for the slave is not in the way.

It was manual 4 speed. I think the exhaust is in the way, but maybe I can get it working. I have to mount my cab up and see what she says.

I would go hydraulic.
mechanical linkage cam be a pita.
and if I might give you some welding pointers, im no expert.
ive only been welding for a little over 10 years, but you get better penetration with clean metal.
even the coating on the metal needs to come off before you attempt to weld.
I know all too well this is a tedious dirty nasty job, but it must be done!
penetration is key. and it took me along time to learn this myself.
as my old boss said, " never weld unless its brite shiny metal"

I just ground the edges of the new piece. But you are right, I need to grind it all down. I think I will do manual first and if I can't get it to fit then I will start collecting hydraulic stuff. I need to get my cab on and see what's what.

the problem with this, is that in order to use mechanical linkage, you will need to remove the casting of the slave on the ZF,
once you go down that path, youre stuck with it.

He has to choose if he wants to do a bunch of modifications under the dash and the firewall for the clutch master cylinder, or do modifications under the truck for the mechanical linkage.

You never know, he might run into problems like Ford did, his firewall may not be strong enough to hold the hydraulic master.

You can do a lot with the bellcrank you have now. Cut the arm and move it over to miss the exhaust, and make a beefy rod with a offset to miss the zf casting boss. Never done it before, just thinking out loud. You will have to stare at it awhile and make your mind up.

They say the clutch pedal is Wilwood, so if you go to their site they may have more selection. The cylinder is a pull type, wrong for our application.

Yeah I am going to set the cab on and see what can be done. I will need help moving the cab, will need a few buddys to help me. I know others have used mechanical linkage, and I like the simplicity of mechanical. I don't want more hydraulic stuff that can fail.

I would have said that too years ago. I always had older cars with mechanical linkage clutches. But I have been driving several later model trucks with the hydraulic setup, and it's pretty reliable. I really have never had a failure after years of use on my diesel and my little ranger pickup.
