In order to keep from contaminating the crankcase oil with WMO I am looking into using gapless second ring on my 7.3 IDI

Upon inspection of my engine, apart only after 7000 miles after rebuild, I killed it by advancing the timing without a pulse meter.
I like to keep using the WMO and a gapless ring will keep combustion gases from getting into the crankcase as much as conventional gapped ring.

Just a thought, I like to leave the oil in the crankcase for extended drains so this is the direction I am planning on taking here real soon.

any thought's are appreciated...

I have two customers with the "zero gap" rings and they both are closing in on 200k/mi the compression readings are still in the mid/high 400's with minimal blow-by. Unfortunately, neither run WMO so I can't tell you the long term with WMO.

So just wondering, who makes the gapless rings for an IDI? I'd guess Total Seal but I thought they only make gasser rings.

The racer crowd has always liked Total Seal, but again, no experience with diesels.

X2 on that I was kinda wondering if they made those for diesels in general, with the compression ratios higher.
towcat,
These customers that have gapless rings, did they do anything else special to their engines or could a person have gapless rings with everything else stock?? on a rebuild that is.

Towcat,
I was looking through Total Seals site, wondering why only 2nd rings are the gapless type. They don't make a top ring gapless???:dunno, for the IDI.
Or am I missing something basic about IDI type of rings that can be used??

Top ring is a Keystone style, I am not certain they make gapless keystone.

The Mahle Turbo piston for the 7.3 is Keystone top ring and the second I think is also a Keystone.
I have to look tonight before I sleep. Im almost ready to assemble my 7.3 again.
Like to seal off the combustion gasses and soot from the crankcase oil, cant think of a better modification for our diesel engine than a gapless piston ring.

I've heard good reports from 6.2 and 6.5 owners running gapless and veggie for 10K mile intervals and still have a golden color to their oil like it came out of a newer LS gasser.

I have a set for a 6.5 I am building for my 93.
