are you a 4x4?
You don't happen to have a driveshaft parking brake, do you? I know some F-superduty(f-450)'s came with them. The neat thing about that is that it uses a 4x4 transmission, so the parking brake could be replaced with a transfer case.
A Transfer case, of course, gives you a low range. You don't need the front axle or anything, just the case itself.
sounds like you own a commercial chassis F350 truck. if you can't find a PSD ZF5(S47) trans, you next best bet is putting in a 4wd Zf5(S42) and haning a transfer case behind it. with the shift linkage hooked up and giving you the option of going to 4LO and that will help you drop your ratios when needed. This late 91 (titled as a 92) has drum brakes and a Ford differential. I saw a transmission with that disk parking brake from a F450 for sale on ebay or craigs list a few months ago but sold quickly.
I read on our forum about the few ZF5's with a low geared reverse but didn't understand the advantage till I started hauling equipment around with a large trailer.
Also, there are 10 leafsprings I counted per each side and 4 of them are supplementary. I suppose standard for a flatbed. The vin sticker says incomplete so I assume the truck was completed by a third party.
The transmission I have is a Zf5s42, is there any advatage to having an s47?
Also, this frame underneath has on both sides a long strap riveted to the bottom to add rigidity. Has anyone seen that before?
Just went out and counted the leaf springs, yep, 10 on bottom plus 4 more auxillary springs. (to ensure that smooth floating ride) Why go see a back surgeon to fuse your bad vertebrae? I can rent you this truck for a small fration of the cost of surgery and guarantee this ride will fuse your whole spine in one day.
