Hey guys Ive been searching the forums for this specific subject but I couldn't find an answer. I have a 1992 F-350 Dually 2wd E4OD. I plan on doing a full swap of a 4x4 Dana 60 up front and a ZF-5 but I don't know if I can do it all at once. Heres the question:

Do you think a 4x4 ZF-5 would swap in without doing the front end conversion as well?

Thanks!

Yes it will swap in. The only thing that connects the trans/transfer case to the front end is the front driveshaft (which you won't be able to install anyway). You'll have two 2hi ranges and one 2lo range. It's kind of like having a 4x4 truck and never locking in the front hubs. Everything will function normally except the front wheel drive.

Alright sweet. I didn’t know if the transfer case would get in the way of anything while it sat there by itself for a little while.

It may not be a total bolt in if you do not have the proper rear driveshaft. Make sure you have that planned out if you need the truck right away. If you do not need it right away, you can always get a shop to make you one to fit.

That seems to be the hardest part to find. I would imagine an extended cab zf5 drive shaft is the same between f-250 and f-350's? Hopefully?

Yes they are the same. Might not fit perfectly, a machinist can cut and weld to make it fit. AND Balance it or you will feel shaking when engaged on the road.

Some of those longer trucks actually had two driveshafts.

I noticed something interesting in the above list. If I am looking at it correctly, I doesn't look like they ever made a f350 extended cab 4x4? Isn't the extended cab 155 in wheelbase?

I picked the 155 inch wheelbase with a E4OD trans and 4x4, and nothing came up in Va. I picked "Northeast" region and this place came up. You can search some more on www.car-part.com and see if there is someone else that may have one.

@david85 is working on a D60 swap over a period of time too. He mounted his xfer case first and has been running it sans front axle or lift for a while until recently. Maybe check his threads for helpful info. You may want to consider putting the skid plate on to help protect it even though it hangs a bit lower.

Here’s one:

Yup, my front end is still bone stock Twin I-Beam. My first goal was to have overdrive so I pulled an E4OD out of someone's parts truck. The donor happened to be a 4wd, so I figured it would be handy to have low range for trailer maneuvering. I've been running the truck this way for many years without any problems.

Boy, is that 2lo ever nice for backing trailers. It's especially nice with a ZF5 and 3.55 gears like I have. I even use it to back into my driveway at the house.

Every time I back my trailer UP my driveway I b***h and moan about that stupid effing engineer that decided on that effing reverse gear ratio. He must’ve been “in with” clutch manufacturers and doctors wanting to sell more anger management pills. Maybe he wanted to be a comedian or was a world champion “trailer backer upper”, either way, I don’t need to be able to do 20mph backwards... don’t ask how I really feel... lol
