This was out of an 87. Got one of the heads off and took some pics. It had a broken head bolt but we got it out.

Your head is shot. The valves were sunk too deep and now the seats are gone. The exhaust seats are replaceable but the intakes are part of the head. Someone has done a valve job possibiley several times on this head... Ot just once but very badly. You have not said if this is a 6.9 or 7.3. I'm thinking it a 7.3 so it will be best to sleeve it. Boring it 20 over and you take a big chance of early cavitation. A 6.9 can easily be bored 20 over and no issues with cavitation.
I just noticed in one of the block pictures that this is a 6.9 block. Look closely at the pic showing the lower corner of the block. there is a triangle coolant passage. these are only found on the 6.9 blocks. The 7.3 blocks have a round coolant passage blocked off with a freeze plug in the head and block... We should remove those when the heads are off. I know of no reason for them being plugged up other than running the coolant hotter thru the heads for emmissions requirements....

I'm with Gary. Why are the exhaust valves so far out away from the seat/head? That's strange. The block (6.9 right?) seems rebuildable. The heads need to be taken to a good machine shop to see if they are or not.

It is in fact a 6.9 87 motor. I think they had the 7.3 rockers. The only reason I bought this is because my 84 has a cracked block. (Common problem for the early 6.9 blocks)

The 84 runs like a champ and uses very little oil and blows zero smoke even at high throttle. What I might do is get the 87 block hot tanked and rebored and put everything from the 84 into it. Will I need to get oversized pistons? Do you think I couild get away with honing the bores?

It just depends on how deep the irregularities are in the cylinders. It may take more than just a honing. The block needs to be cleaned up and see how bad the damage is then. It may require a few thousands to get those defects out of the bores.

This is a hope... If its not been bored out to 40 or farther you can bore it and be fine seeing its a 6.9 block. No need for sleeves unless its bored out past 40. The over size if any will be stamped in the top of the pistons. Or they will have an A, B, C, D, size fitment mark.

It is amazing what a .002 power hone will clean up, also the intake depth may be an illusion, really hard to tell without measuring.

The guy who took the head off said nothing about the head. He was more concerned that there was a broken head bolt.

Clean it up get some measurements and let us know, but if yours runs great, I'm guessing the block is cracked by the heater? you could take the 2 and make one....
