The windshield people said my truck has to go to a body shop to fix what looks like some light surface rust that was under the silicone around my windshield, if insurance doesn’t cover that like they would the windshield then looks like I’ll be pulling it myself and wire wheeling it, primer and gluing a new one in myself. If it’s as simple as it sounds?

I'd pull it myself. Do the repairs myself. THEN have the windshield guys do the replacement.

They are saying body shop because, well, they would! You are a customer. A total idiot who couldn't possibly know enough to do a good job yourself. (And they have no doubt had plenty of that kind of experience. And are wary of the warranty responsibility.)

Just do it. Fix it right. Then let them do the placing of the new one. They will likely do that better than you can.
