Looks like they cut out the fusible links on everything.

And yeah, probably stereo stuff. My 86 bronco was a mess to clean up too.

Made some progress after work today. Got the junctions split apart and ring terminals installed on a terminal post. Added fuse to starter relay and removed the fusable link. Short to ground is gone and headlights and front running lights work. Thats the good news. Bad news is still no break lights, dash lights, and dome light stays on. One step forward three steps back. My helper checked the fuses. All good. Not sure if I have power to the fuse box. Will check that later.

when I had no brake lights or dash lights, it was because my headlight switch was melted. Not sure if your '86 has the same issues as the OBS years with too much current going through the switch, but it is a common problem with the later years.

I'm pretty sure all the IDI trucks have the headlight issue...... y'all gotta do relays to the headlights! It's really scary when they start turning on and off for no apparent reason!

A year or so back I bought the LED Bulbs for the rear tail lights on the 86, equivlent to the 1157`s, at the Hot August Night car show in Reno Nevada.
Guy said just install them and good to go.

I did have the LED Back Up Lights and they are a big improvement over the 1156.

We drive up to Portland, Or. to see the daughter and family that live in Tigard. We are on I-5 coming into Portland and a Big Rig is blowing his Horn at us. What`s his problem?

Turn off and on 99 coming through Tigard around mid-night, and a couple are trying to get our attention. Pull off into a gas station, and they tell us we don`t have any tail Lights.

Discover if I turn off the lights and back on, they work for a while then go out.
If we swap these lights in, we need to install the resistor/capacitor or what ever it is to make them work.
It has to be wired in.
Guy at car show, said, plug and play, not exactly.
Couldof got my *** run over.

Something to think about guys.

I love the picture of using a Zip Tie to connect the wires together.
That go`s right up there using a 22 bullet for a Fuse.

Switch is in good shape. I took it out and inspected and tested both connector an harness. Look OK. Headlights and front running lights are now working. I need to check front turn signals.
Rear brake lights, running lights and turn signals are off. I need to double check the running lights are off and not just dim, as they are wired just like the front. I have power to brake light switch, fuse box.

Hopefully I can get some time to day to check some more stuff and get the relay kit in (they came the other day). Definitely don't want to get run over or rear ended cause I don't have rear lights or have a fire in the cab.

Installed the headlight relay kit today after work. Curious where you are mounting the relay. I put them in front of the battery, but not sure that's the best spot.

Well after getting the lights going, I decided to move it to another part of the yard. Blew the pitman arm seal in the steering box I had resealed. Got a new seal, and put it in. Didn't blow out, but was leaking. The hell with it. Bought a red head steering box, lee pump, and got a cooler. It's been raining and snowing, so I haven't been able to put them in till today. I pulled the old stuff out so I could return the core to red head. One mistake I made was that the red head box comes set in the middle of the range. I tried to put the drag link on, but it was a little off. Figured I'd tighten up the pitman arm a bit in case the angle was due to not being not installed all the way. Bad idea, it moved the box from center so I had to spin the wheel from end stop to end stop to find the center. Not two bad. Exactly 2 turns in each direction from center for the new box. After finding center, I jacked up the wheels and attached the drag link, connected the borgson steering shaft with the wheel centered, and only then tightened up the pitman arm. Learned a little.

Went to pull the pulley from the pump, and that's when I noticed the little lip that the pullers grab wasn't there. It was just flush. Weird. After some time, I check the back of the pulley, and low and behold there was the little lip. Geeze. Some genius put the pulley on backwards. Did I mention earlier that I resealed both the steering pump and the steering box. So the genius was me. Doh! Scratching my head how I'm gonna get this off. I have another pump, so I can get a pully quick, but I think these are getting hard to find, so I'd like to get this one off. The center of the pulley is recessed back behind the extended 2 grove pulley, so a single bearing splitter would probably bend the grove. I was thinking maybe stacking a small one inside the bigger one and hope I could put it in a press and hold the weight on the center of the pulley so I can press the shaft out. Don't think I'll do this again, so live and learn. Anybody that's been though this I'd be interested to hear what you tried and how it worked.

I think I'm starting to come down with the crud that eveyone in the house has. Judging on how they are feeling I may not be doing much for next couple days.

You could heat the center of the pulley, the part that gets pressed over the shaft, and maybe that would help it top come off easier.

Hopefully I'll get some time to spend on it this weekend. I sent the redhead core back today. While getting the oil out of the box cranking from stop to stop to pump it out, some if it was pretty black. Maybe chewed up seal material. Must have done something wrong with the reseal. The new fluid shouldn't have looked like that.

Got the cooler installed this weekend. Next need to get the pully and bracket from the old pump and put it on the new lee and get some trans/power steering hose to plumb it.

Got time to finish up the power steering system. So now I have Borgson steering shaft, Lee power steering pump, and a Red Head steering box. Together they took out all the slop. I used to have about 3-4 inches of play in the wheel. Now I have none. Turn the wheel, and the wheels start moving. Super nice. Gonna have to do the brown truck too. Here's some pics. The Lee pump is nice because it uses Saganaw internals, with higher pressure and volume than stock, but is drop in replacement. No whine at all. With the Red Head and Borgson shaft, it's pricey, but worth it for me. Steering seems like one of the important things as I"m rolling down the road - that and brakes. So I'll pony up the cash for tight steering. First pic shows the lee pump and top of the red head box, the second is the external cooler I added. Ripped out that extra line that hung down by the engine cradle.
