Modern DPF systems actually tend to be reliable, as we have been using them for 17-18 years. Early DPF systems, such as found on the 6.4 PSD, LMM Dmax, and 07.5-12 6.7 Cummins were very new technology, and used the engine injectors to burn the soot into ash, which was not a very good design. DEF is a bit newer, about 14 years, and has inherent problems due to it’s aforementioned properties.

Hi in the Cascades, Nearly- Redmond,Oregon
Yeah the regen is less than ideal. And I am not convinced the fumes from the DEF burning are safer for the environment than the carbon being trapped and burnt off in the DPF. Carbon is not a greenhouse gas. Falls back to the earth.

During Regen I get about 7mpg. It typically regens for 25-30 miles of highway driving. My experience is I burn an extra 3 gallons during the regen process. So every time it regens, I lose $10-12. Oof.
I'm embarrassed for appearing so dumb when I ask this, but what in the world is "REGEN?"
And what is/does "During Regen" mean?
The closest thing I/we got to anything that might have something to do with these terms might be that '14 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD Duramax 6.6 that I/we inherited nearly 5 yr ago when our son passed. He had already deleted the DEF & put in new exhaust system, etc, etc.

This rig got near 230,000 miles on it.....& I've put 30K of them........and it scares me cause if/when something breaks or quits I FLAT OUT NOT GOING TO KNOW WHAT TO DO TO FIX IT!!!! There so much I don't know bout this rig.

First week I had this rig it threw a code on dash rolling down road & I couldn't read it. Finally bout 5 miles later I got my glasses on & it said "Right Rear Tire Low"......I pulled over & nearly new RR tire was already ruined!!! I flat out had NEVER heard of "LOW TIRE" Codes!!! Turned out the wheels have senders in them to tell Dumb Folks like me that tire is low!
My main point is that I'm way....wwwaaayyyyyy behind the rest of the world!!!!
& I better get Bessie fixed, painted, & keep her cause except for major stuff, I can work on & fix her & keep her going!!!!!

So.....what is "Regen" & "During Regen"?

Regeneration of the dpf
In English
Unclogging the stupid filter
It sorta lights it on fire in the filter housings...

In essence
Putting the trapped emissions back in the air (in my opinion)
It's supposed to eliminate the pollution.
Have you ever followed one during regen -Lame

OK @Clb maybe I've sorta heard a little about some this stuff. I've never known that I was ever following one during Regen. (Probably followed something that was belching smoke & spitting green chunks at me, but I didn't know what was happening)

Years ago our neighbor was talking about his son working for the Forest Service here in Or. He drove a Forest Service pick-up, maybe a Chevy, or something, I don't remember.

Anyway he was talking about working out there in forest, dry & flammable, driving around, and something about every now & then the truck would belch fire out tailpipe. Something to do with cleaning itself up or something, something to do with all this wonderful new
anti-smogg stuff that we're supposed to be happy with.

On subject of "Beating the MPG horse" .......Personally I think we should be & could be getting 40-50-60 MPG on/in our diesel & gas rigs. Buuutttt.............Every time I tell the "Big Boys" smart stuff they never listen to me!!!!

One more Data Point for you Clb:

Ran up to Chicago and back before Christmas with my 24' Pace car hauler. Just over a 1000 miles round trip. Going Up was with an empty trailer and during a snow storm, so average speed was low. Return trip had a lightweight '62 Ford Galaxie in the box, clear roads, and ran mostly 75 mph. Weight doesn't matter much with that trailer as it is little more than a big white parachute.

'85 F350, DRW, CC, LB.
3.73:1 rear gear and ZF5 transmission.
7.3, CDD 90 cc pump and Stage 1 turbo setup.
Oregon Cam Grinders cam.
6.9 heads and manifolds.
3.5" Banks Exhaust
Speedo is 5% slow, and I account for this in my calculations.

Trip up averaged a bit over 11 mpg, but again did alot of running in the 45 to 55 mph range due to the weather. Ambient Temp ranged from 35 deg. F in Springfield to -5 F in Chicago.
Trip back averaged right at 8.3 mpg. Lots of 70 to 75 mph running. Ambient temp ranged from 25 deg. to 45 deg. F.

I typically get 14 to 15 mpg running empty, mostly in town/city driving, a bit less on the freeway running empty.

As an interesting comparison. The following week we took off to Minnesota with the same rig, but a '60 T-bird in the box. The '85 started bleeding engine oil near KC, got left at a Ford dealer, and I had to rent a truck. Rental was a 2026 F250 with the 6.7 and the 10 speed auto. CC, LB, 4x4. Towing the same trailer, that truck averaged 13.5 mpg over about 2200 miles, with a noticeable tail wind both directions. Lots of 70 to 75 mph Interstate running. Ambient temps ranged from 45 deg. F to 10 deg F in NW Minny. I was surprised with the 10 speed, very little gear hunting and it kept the engine between 1600 and 1800 (peak torque) consistently. I will give the Ford engineers a thumbs up for the tune on that one.

my apologies for not being able to help out here bud.
i can tell you that im getting 45 MPG out of my IDI, but that would be too democratic for me.
i wouldnt beable to show you hard numbers. nor could i have any pride.

but i can say with the upmost certainty, that if you dont drive your truck, you cant get any MPG

might just be the cold ones talking. :joker:

 Considering how much I drive it, we could use the earth's rotation to calculate the miles travelled by the thing with the key off, and probably be very impressed with the numbers...
The rockcrawler averages 16 round town, when it wants to.
The treehugger california model civic does 25 in town.
I've not put 30k on this since I joined, and drove it to Ak n back 1 spring.
So I'll keep sniveling about not having to pay off a 85k towpig for a while longer.
