One more Data Point for you Clb:
Ran up to Chicago and back before Christmas with my 24' Pace car hauler. Just over a 1000 miles round trip. Going Up was with an empty trailer and during a snow storm, so average speed was low. Return trip had a lightweight '62 Ford Galaxie in the box, clear roads, and ran mostly 75 mph. Weight doesn't matter much with that trailer as it is little more than a big white parachute.
'85 F350, DRW, CC, LB.
3.73:1 rear gear and ZF5 transmission.
7.3, CDD 90 cc pump and Stage 1 turbo setup.
Oregon Cam Grinders cam.
6.9 heads and manifolds.
3.5" Banks Exhaust
Speedo is 5% slow, and I account for this in my calculations.
Trip up averaged a bit over 11 mpg, but again did alot of running in the 45 to 55 mph range due to the weather. Ambient Temp ranged from 35 deg. F in Springfield to -5 F in Chicago.
Trip back averaged right at 8.3 mpg. Lots of 70 to 75 mph running. Ambient temp ranged from 25 deg. to 45 deg. F.
I typically get 14 to 15 mpg running empty, mostly in town/city driving, a bit less on the freeway running empty.
As an interesting comparison. The following week we took off to Minnesota with the same rig, but a '60 T-bird in the box. The '85 started bleeding engine oil near KC, got left at a Ford dealer, and I had to rent a truck. Rental was a 2026 F250 with the 6.7 and the 10 speed auto. CC, LB, 4x4. Towing the same trailer, that truck averaged 13.5 mpg over about 2200 miles, with a noticeable tail wind both directions. Lots of 70 to 75 mph Interstate running. Ambient temps ranged from 45 deg. F to 10 deg F in NW Minny. I was surprised with the 10 speed, very little gear hunting and it kept the engine between 1600 and 1800 (peak torque) consistently. I will give the Ford engineers a thumbs up for the tune on that one.
