I backed timing off to 17* initial and fattened both idle screws a little and it's running very smooth. I was running premium fuel and with adjusting the carb I was starting to get low rpm knocking with the 20*+ initial timing so hopefully this will cure it. I'm hoping I can run regular now without the risk of knocking, but we'll see. It also ran decent all the way down into the single digits for initial timing which is a relief as it would die before I got the carb adjusted if I went near it. It ran at 0 degrees timing too, but it didn't like it (obviously).

Haven't really messed with the truck since February. It still drinks gas like nobodies business, but it warms up fast on these cold(er) mornings. Its leaking oil out the breather at the rear of the passenger side valve cover. I'm going to do an oil change and keep on driving it. Its definitely got more go than my IDI does.

Decided to go ahead and buy a carb for the thing. I don't know why I waited so long, the thing drives like a dream now, almost like a fuel injected motor. No more stumbles, or hesitation at certain throttle inputs for given RPM's. Chose a Edelbrock 1906 iirc which is one of their avs2 carbs, 650 cfm.

Found a coolant leak from the water pump, looks like when I did the cam install, I forgot to get one of the bolts on the very bottom of the waterpump (right above harmonic balancer).

OOPS! At least you found the leak. Hopefully you don't have to pull the water pump back off to fix it.

So this truck has always had a rough hot idle. I figured the new carb would help this (and it did when cold, old carb was dribbling fuel), but it was still idling rough like it was running way rich when hot. I deleted most of the EGR AIR crap, but still had the vacuum line going to the EGR valve diaphragm. Went ahead and removed that, so no EGR valve movement. Low and behold, nice smooth hot idle. Was able to go almost a full turn in on the idle adjustment screws, now the exhaust doesn't stink. Set timing at 15 degrees. I think I need to work on the accelerator pumps as if I hit the throttle fast theirs a bit of a cut out feeling, but it picks up within half a second. If I ease into the throttle its smooth acceleration.

Last tank all in town, 7.9 mpg at least commute is only 6 miles a day. Honestly though, before this truck I was never a fan of gas rigs, but this thing does drive nice now. So much off idle torque, I basically cruise around town in 4th as I can run down to around 18 mph in that gear.

Can't beat big block torque, I just saw the power numbers of the new 7.3 for 2020, looks impressive!
