Well, since I was in process of a really crappy week, I decided to take a gamble and do a little more research on Mater before I pulled the motor.
I figured that I'd start with #3 since it showed the lowest compression numbers.
Glad I did because as I was trying to remove the IP line, the entire injector was spinning around. Dang thing was loose in the hole and never showed any symptoms of such.
I got it out, threw it on the tester and found it ******* like a cow on a flat rock. As you can see in the video, the pintle is stuck wide open.

Cause of death????? You can see in the picture of the 2 injector tips that the one on the right has seen some extreme heat......Caused by the injector being loose and seized the pintle.

Pulled a few more injectors out, tested them all popping off at 1950 psi.;Sweet

Grabbed one of my cores, gutted it, re shimmed it to match and TADA!!!!!
No more hammering noise and running much smoother.

Took him for a spin around the block and am happily satisfied that I resolved the problem fearing the worst.

As said in the movie Evan Almighty.........Do the dance!:Thumbs Up

It looks like that injector drank a lot of beer. Good find.

I wish I still had access to one of those testers. I want to have mine checked as I too have a knock. BUT, mine is smoking white so I may be in need of a pump soon.

my very own hell
SWS, smoking white can also be result of too much fuel at the wrong time, when I had my #5 injector loosen up in the head like Ron's did I lost compression and the fuel wasn't burning off completely, and I got lost of white smoke - tightened it down, compression went up, fuel is burning good again, I've put thousads of miles on the engine since and I still runs tip-top. So do not exclude injectors as a culprit to your issues as well, and you may wanna sweet talk some fellow OB member who's near you and has a tester to pop-test them injectors for ya...

Tell me about it. I thought that same thing last night when I was shutting the hood. I'm one happy dog catcher now!

Oh yeah, I'm sure you would have heard me then.
Plus the savings of not having to replace the gaskets.:puke:

Yeah bladder was full.LOL

I'm 100% positive that the injector had been loose for awhile judging by the amount of heat that the tip had seen and the pintle is fused into the tip.

It'll make a nice addition to the Moostradamus Museum of Mystery.

So kiddies, make sure they're tight in their sockets.:D

His rest is over, now it's time to put him back to work, haulin firewood.

How does a injector become loose in the hole, when the hard line is bolted to it....? ;Really

P.O. may have not seated it properly.:dunno

I can say it was a PITA to get the line nut apart from the injector though.
I thought at one point I was going to end up twisting the line and junking it out. It was tight to say the least.
