Talked to a diesel mech last night that use to have a 7.3 idi. Ran like a bat out Of he'll so I asked him what he did. He replied all he did was max the timing out and turn the pump all the way up. I trust this guy pretty well and he did this with about 300k on the motor. Anyone here has done this? Ok ow alot of y'all talk about tue egts but this is cOnfusing. So I went loom at the truck today am it really is maxed out. And it's got close to 450k now but is wide open. Smokes like a **** and runs like I've never seen. Anyone here done this?

It probably doesn't see too high of egt's because the fuel isn't burning, the best performance comes from a properly tuned pump, both in regards to timing and fuel delivery. You should only see a light haze of smoke at wide open throttle.

You can afford to **** fuel away as unburnt and thus smoke? Go ahead...I myself would rather see a balanced setup....running correct ratio of fuel for max power and nothing more as that's a waste of money but eh...*** do I know

I would say that **** mechanic is one of those people that gives a diesel a bad name, by making a smoker. If he knew what he was doing, it would have run like a **** better backing the fuel off. Ya, you can make em smoke by also setting the timing retarded. Could be he's a little retarded. Cranking the fuel up can result in something like this below. A sheared drive shaft, a junk IP, and a big lightening of the wallet.

How exactly does one "max out the timing" ? Don't answer that.

The sad part, is it wasn't turned up at all; I actually turned it down about two full turns to get it to stop smoking.

Not saying this is what happened, but very well could have been.
That's possibly where things went wrong. Could be that your timing was/is way off (retarded), it will smoke like crazy then. Two turns, hope you mean backed out and not down (in). That screw is very short, and the tension (fuel setting ) is done on a very expensive test stand, one or two hex flats IN, can make a big difference. That screw is very "tight" to turn, backing out that much could have loosened all the tension on the C ring and rollers causing it to jam and shear the shaft. Pic shows the C ring and rollers and broken drive shaft settin on top.

Yes it was out... not inward. The power was amazing, but the black smoke was just, well looked like I was burning tires for fuel; but did it have power.. knowing what smoke means, I backed her off, one flat at a time, until the smoke was just a haze. Still purred like a kitten, and I had it taken to the shop to time it, and it actually ran worse when I got it back, it was WAY retarded at that point, so I timed by ear. Accurate, not exactly, did it start again without ether, yes.

Two months later, going to Iowa in Feb., pump let go on the freeway. What fun.

My idi doesmt smoke at all or even haze it looks like. Looks like a gas trucks exhaust. I just want some more power amd atleat a
Little bit of smoke for my stacks but I'm sure these motors are like the rest and with power comes smoke. I'm just tired of waitin on a egt gauge. So I might do it by ear
