One would think the the "long" Mistubishi ones would be best because they have a 3.4kW rating, while the Nippondenso ones are only 2.5kW. Higher draw = faster spinning of the engine?

I'm leaning towards they could be geared differently, having different ratios and therefore different power requirements?

Really just an off the cuff assumption, but seems logical given the difference in the layouts.

I'm running the inline reduction style. Some of you may remember that it stuck on a few months ago for about 5 min while driving. I have a spare (same style) on the shelf but still haven't replaced the starter yet because it still seems to work fine!

Ok, the starter just arrived.

Sucker is much bigger and heavier than I expected. (It's also black. The ad and even the shipping label said "natural", and showed it shiney. Not complaining, just making a note of it. )

I kind of expected it to be smaller.

Anyway, can someone tell me the socket size for the three bolts? I am going to be crawling around in the mud and freezing rain, swapping this. Just wanting to get as much in order and ready, before I begin, as possible.

I usually use a 3/8 ratchet with both long (8"), and short (3") extensions to get the lovely top bolt.

If the stock bolts were changed out for some regular 3/8" bolts, the heads will be 9/16". I have seen that done before so I was warning you.

Maybe get some cardboard boxes from your local appliance store to put under you. Or buy a couple large ones at Home Depot.). Keep you drier and warmer.

Going to use a foam pad made for camping or exercise or something like that. And a tarp.

Save yourself some grief and put a stud on the top bolt. It will seriously help you as you will be able to “hang” that heavy sucker on the stud as opposed to holding it up there while you fight for the bolt you can’t see.

I’m sure you could do it, but save yourself the grief.

Once I get the bolts out of there, I will see if I have another one of the same size and more threads, that I can make a stud from.

Or better yet, a piece of allthread the same size.

If I don't have anything suitable here, for making the stud, then it isn't going to happen. I won't be able to drive to town, to get a suitable stud. And if I have to put it back together with the bolts, then it will simply stay that way.
