I like the black and blue look, pretty sweet. Sounds like progress on most of my projects, two steps forward one step back. Curious what the rocker oiling issue turns out to be. Bad lifter maybe?

no, its not a lifter.
its the damn valve train.
and now i think the oil cooler header.
i shut it down for the night, after replacing the rockers, then replacing another, all of the rockers seem to be ok now.

oil pressure was getting to below 10 psi @ idle.
its the same issue i had with it previously.
gonna swap it with the engine i fired up last month.
that one had good oil pressure.

this is the other engine, VT looks good.
no issues, and it made no sounds.
altho pulling it apart, i noticed 2 pushrods were a bit chewed up.
replaced them with a few of the ones Hydro-IDI left here, and installed them.

and this is where im at now. need to solve the low oil pressure first.

and then either order all new pushrods and rockers
which i did not when i built it.
thought they would be alright..

may be better to order a set of custom pushrods for the roller rockers...
just may do that.

video is uploading

You can hear the tick for sure. It sure sounds like it's coming from there.

So color me confused. What's causing the rocker to walk sideways like that? Bent pushrod? It hydraulic so there's no lash to set right? Twisted rocker? Funny valve spring? Trying to educate myself.

new springs. gotta be the rockers themselves
ive mismatched this set to get good ones.
all pushrods are straight.

When you attempt using a used rocker its best to sand or grind off the wear mark. Then you have a flat area for the valve to meet up with instead of the rocker to valve contact area trying to meet up.

Based on what I am seeing check rocker pedestals for square and wear. It appears the rockers are canting over on the pedestals.

Wear of pedestals or rockers or NOT keeping said parts matched is potential cause.

I doubt rocker bolt holes are missaligned but checking those too may be a good idea.

Clearly valve train on these engines does indeed hqve substantial issues. Guide wear imparted from thrust and alignment.

I would NOT likely grind the rocker tip as described by Gary as holding it square to the pivot may be hard. I may dress the tip with a known good flat stone for sharpening just lightly workimg away any edges from valve contact.

If heads have been milled and the valves sunk to spec or more this will cause an alignmemt issue with valve train geometry. The pushrods will be to long and rockers canted upward at valve and down at pushrod.

Try some marking dye....see where wear is occurring on rocker and valves.

Good luck.

i think i have things narrowed down.
today i checked pedestals and valve stems
pedestals are dead nuts.
used dykem on them, a slight pass over em with a machinist stone, and they all look uniform.

my valve stems seem to have a +/- 0.005" difference inbetween I&E, which does not worry me.

after a run cycle, #1 I&E rockers both have zero lash.
all other rockers have a slight play @ base lobe
so when i back them off, the lifter will fill up, and when i go to tighten them down, it will actually open both valves.
THIS WORRIES ME!
pushrods too long for cam?
lifters seem to be working fine.
rockers.. still a pile of ****. chincy ass IH and their stamped assembled rockers.
i will be using the H&S's atleast they are individually adjustable.
pulling cam and installing stocker.
after i do yard clean up.

screw those things there going in the garbage!
i did notice that the sheet metal that encapsulates the boss are bent outta shape.
but the alignment issue has been taken care of with swapping rockers.
other issues are at hand.

It is not the cam. Its the used rockers. But you are going to use the roller rockers so please run them and post back with what you find. I'm VERY interested in how they run on an idi engine. BTW.. Nice looking return line caps. Did you make those yourself.

@ADV made the caps, and an awesome job he did, no leaks!

Gary, as i value your input, i can say with certainty that the rockers are no longer an issue.

are they great? NO, but the ones im using now are copacetic.
they are all aligned decently against the valve stem.
the issue im having now is lash.
now on these engines, not unlike the Pontiac production blocks, they are a non adjustable valvetrain,.
you simply torque the bolts and youre done.
but i do not have any kind of wiggle room when #1 cylinder is at BDC and both valves are closed.
i installed rockers from another cylinder that was golden, and i still had this issue.
i will be using the roller rockers.
but i am going back to a stock cam.

Is lifter pumped and jacking...it should bleed down of course but then you already know that.

Why going back to stock cam? What is wrong with the one you have....which one btw?
