I can believe that one. Polaroids are from long enough ago, that a lot of people told the truth.

The reason it wouldn't work, is because there's a lot of money in pan handling and they really will NOT work for food even if it's only holding a cup.
The one I always laugh at is the people you see around the Walmart parking lot holding a sign asking for gas money or food, leaning against a couple year old Lexus or BMW.

All I can do is laugh and think that their monthly car payment is more than I paid in total for my most expensive vehicle.

Not going to say that they didn't have the money for food or gas, but the vehicle they were driving cost more than everything I own combined so I figure if they want to survive, they can figure it out.

That is the essence of the capitalist system...and the essence of freedom...to be able to make your own choices...

As long as you do not encroach or harm anyone or their property...you can do as you choose....

Communism is to take from the productive and give to the non-productive..it works until you run out of other peoples money and other resources...and it sucks the life out of everything around it...like a black hole...

That reminds me....I got hurt at work once...a few years ago....I pulled a muscle or something in my shoulder and I planned on staying at home without pay to recover...

Well...I got a call at home from work shortly after I had laid down and they decided that I should go to the doctor...

Okay...whatever...I was just going to take a couple of days off and not ask anyone for anything...but whatever...

So...this was during the campaign season for the last election...you know...'The Big Guy' versus...'The Man from NYC'...

So...I get to the Dr's office early next morning...and they were not open...but the vestibule in the office bldg. was open and other customers were waiting as well....one elderly guy had a red hat with the NYC guys name on it...and some young girl was ragging on him for wearing the hat...she had apparently gone to college and 'Knew' everything she needed to know about life...

She was trying to convince the guy that Socialism was not Communism and some such...and that the form of govt. and social justice that she was advocating was the greatest thing since sliced bread...

I told her that what she was talking about was all the same in the grand scheme of things...and when push came to shove...(enforcement)...no one was going to make any fine distinctions based on any ideology...

She disagreed...

I asked her...'What do you do for a living..?' She said she was going to college and planning on joining the Air Force.

I asked her.."Do you live by yourself...in an apartment or something..?

No...she said she lived with her parents...

I told her...'Well... if you are so concerned with social justice...why don't you call up your folks and tell them you are bringing 6-8 more people home to their house just to make it fair..?

Not another word...but I noticed later in the waiting room that she was furiously texting on her phone...

I did not see any cupholders in the DR's office....it musta been a cupholder desert...

The other part of capitalism is that I get to choose not to support the pan handler with cupholders and AC in his car.

I'm with you though, most people, even "die hard conservatives" don't realize that they're really socialist.

These are two of the reasons why I started the "Who's Smarter" thread about a year ago. To continue on with Xolatem's statement, it's too bad that most people aren't taught the they also have to live with the consequences of their decisions. They are taught that if they don't like them, all they have to do is cry "free things" and it should be handed to them.

If I were president, there'd be no free social services and a cupholder in every truck, provided you bought it yourself......... from @chillman88 s company.......made of 440C surgical stainless!!!

But wait! That's communism!

You are so right..!! I come from a time where that was expected....

It seems now that young people expect a parachute or safety net with every jump...

How did that come about...?

I'm sure there's a few of us on here that are an exception to that rule. But I get what you're shakin' out.

Now I need to figure out how to install a cup holder in my samurai...

I agree...but there are enough bad examples to make someone who helped build this country to wonder what direction it is headed....

All we can do is try to direct and influence the ones that are 'on the fence' to do the best thing ...that is ...work hard, expect little, and quit whining and buckle down when things seem tough...

I was just talking with The Girl this morning...about our customer experience at a tractor dealer...the parts counter guy was great !!

We wanted a blade for a HD weedeater that we use for various things...and there were a few choices depending on how thick or tough the materiel we wanted to cut was...

We could have bought up to four blades at once...but the guy asked what specifically we wanted to do and advised us accordingly....

In a patient and helpful way...even though others were waiting...

In my estimation...that was an exhibition of knowledge, experience, willingness to help, and a focus on performance of the machine and not merely a desire to pad the sale...

We are appreciative and they have our future business...

This customer experience is in direct opposition with what we came to expect near D.C....

Good, down home helpfulness....and not just an isolated occurrence...we are expriencing this kind of helpfulness everywhere we go...

I forgot to ask the guy about any logo-emblazoned tractor cupholders...but I will next time.

Cupholder warmup...

I needed a belt buckle...the last one that I had broke...and I was out of useable belts...I shopped for a belt buckle before...but I just wanted plain jane...nuthin' fancy...all of the buckles I found were...uh...too flashy...and I was done with chintzy pot-metal cast cheap crap.

When I had to resort to a tie-strap as a belt...I finally got the motivation to do something about it...this effer ain't gonna break...

I made it out of the wire that was used to hold together a bundle of rebar...and it is not done...it needs to be touched up and finished...this is just the first stage of development.

I used my truck to do this...the vise mounted to the back...the torch in the tool box...Teeny welder out of the passenger floorboard...welding stuff in a weather-proof crate in the back, grinders, original Vise Grips, other pliers and clamps...etc...so...this could actually go in the 'What did you do...'...you know...

By the way...I did it between rain sprinkles...we have not had any measurable rain in a while...and it was only really just misting and light sprinkling...but I just sat out in it and waited 'til I could pounce on it...

Good thing we had a water hose there...the red clay was built up pretty bad and it will absolutely not just scrape off...it cakes...

Very utilitarian! This could be the beginning of your "utility belt" like batman. I bet he had a cupholder on his belt that transferred to the batmobile readily.

You must be a fan of the 60's Ford performance cars...

I can't remember if I have seen cast-iron Tri-Y's on anything but in a picture...but they look heavier than...uh...well...you know...

They look heavy but they also held heat in the exhaust tract longer and probably helped exhaust scavenging...

Trade-offs with everything...

I wonder if they scream louder now than when I rode a school bus...?

Every day...the red-headed female driver was banging gears and hauling butt down a community road and careening and bouncing alongside a lake...

I usually had a window seat and I had to look around the bus to see how and who I would have to get past to get outta that cage just in case we all plunged into that lake....

Every day...I had to formulate an escape plan...depending on who was on the bus or not...

You see...the lake appeared on a curve in the road...and I am convinced that the bus driver must have kept a personal tally of how fast she could round that curve and scare the bejeezers outta these bratty kids...they all sure fell silent just before the curve...and probably gripped the bottom of their seats in terror...

It seemed that the bus driver guaged her success in a number of ways...how and where the quiet time commenced...and the speed at which she could make the curve without tipping over...

I don't remember ever seeing a cupholder on that bus...but whatever was in it...if it had one...was dead meat...

...like we all knew that we were gonna be...some day...like drowned rats...

Doing chores or homework after school in the afternoon...? Was that a concern...? No...

We had to survive the bus ride first...

It was hell...I tell ya...

We didn't have a lake to contend with, just sheer cliffs on a narrow and twisty 2 lane. Also snow and ice in the winter.

In fact, there wasn't a winter I recall where the bus didn't do a 360 on the ice heading down the mountain to school at least once. Somehow no one ever got hurt.
It was one of the big, long, greyhound size buses. My school only ran 4 buses. One for each direction you could go. 1 road up the mountain, one down, and north and south.

Once I had my drivers license I learned to love the narrow twisty roads. Didn't have that same enthusiasm on the bus.
