I actually think a 6.9 or 7.3 would make a good grain truck motor, as long as the grain truck has cupholders

There’s a YouTube channel called wrench benders that is swapping a R&D upgraded 6.9 into a 1968 international loadstar grain truck. Unfortunately, the truck does not feature cup holders (or seat belts for that matter), so Nero will have to look at other options to have cup holders in his life.

But that Tri-Y!!
You must be a fan of the 60's Ford performance cars...

I can't remember if I have seen cast-iron Tri-Y's on anything but in a picture...but they look heavier than...uh...well...you know...

They look heavy but they also held heat in the exhaust tract longer and probably helped exhaust scavenging...

Trade-offs with everything...

If a 6.9 and 7.3 can move a school bus full of screaming kids,
I wonder if they scream louder now than when I rode a school bus...?

Every day...the red-headed female driver was banging gears and hauling butt down a community road and careening and bouncing alongside a lake...

I usually had a window seat and I had to look around the bus to see how and who I would have to get past to get outta that cage just in case we all plunged into that lake....

Every day...I had to formulate an escape plan...depending on who was on the bus or not...

You see...the lake appeared on a curve in the road...and I am convinced that the bus driver must have kept a personal tally of how fast she could round that curve and scare the bejeezers outta these bratty kids...they all sure fell silent just before the curve...and probably gripped the bottom of their seats in terror...

It seemed that the bus driver guaged her success in a number of ways...how and where the quiet time commenced...and the speed at which she could make the curve without tipping over...

I don't remember ever seeing a cupholder on that bus...but whatever was in it...if it had one...was dead meat...

...like we all knew that we were gonna be...some day...like drowned rats...

Doing chores or homework after school in the afternoon...? Was that a concern...? No...

We had to survive the bus ride first...

It was hell...I tell ya...

@XOLATEM I remember those days, that old 366 screaming for mercy as they grabbed another gear. We didn't have any lakes to worry about but none of the roads go straight or flat anywhere.

I remember when I was in about 3rd or 4th grade riding the bus one morning. One of those mornings they should have called school, but in those days as long as the school was standing you better find a way to get there.

I was the first pickup on an hour and a half bus ride. I was the only one on the bus yet, a couple miles from my house there was a really steep hill about 1/4 mile down to a 1 lane bridge at the bottom. We had gotten about a 1/4" of ice overnight, the bus starts down this hill and turns completely sideways sliding down this hill towards a 1 lane bridge with 4' tall and 1' thick banisters. I just know this bus is gonna hit it and end up upside-down on the other side.

This road is so narrow that I know the front and rear wheels had be almost in the ditches on both sides. About 15 feet before it hit the bridge the good lord decided that wasn't our time and the rear tires slid down in a couple feet deep ditch which allowed the front to swing back around rite through the bridge, rear tires jumped out of the ditch. Never even touched the bridge, and she somehow had the wherewithal to immediately make the 1/4 mile steep climb up the other side after all that.

Just like she meant it to work out like that. I really doubt any of that was ever reported either.

Now THAT was some serious triple-throwdown bus driving....!!!!

Jesus Lord Have Mercy.....

I wonder what her pants looked like when she finished up the route..?

That reminded me of a time when the school was NOT standing...

or, at least it was not in any shape to have any more classes...

...the roof was caved in and the fields around it were LITTERED with papers and trash....

Oh, yeah...if there were any cupholders....they got scattered from there to Kingdom Come...

Let me back up a little....it must have been around April...16th 2011 and I was in the middle of helping a buddy build his garage...a quonset hut type building...and a storm was brewing up...

We stopped working for a while but the storm did not really affect us much...turns out that were were a few miles north of where a tornado/waterspout came up outta the York River and tore through Gloucester County, Virginia...

At first when I hear about the tornado...I told my buddy..."well, it looks like we dodged that bullet..."

A lot of people and houses...did not...

Now...I realize that you guys in the MidWest prob'ly see tornados all of the time...but in Gloucester...it is an almost-never thing...

Nobody was prepared for what was to come...it took a crazy path though the county...I saw the path later...because I rented a plane and pilot outta Williamsburg and flew over it to see the damage some time later...

People were astounded by the damage to the school...you could see it from the main road...traffic was backed up like nobodys business...

I imagine that most of the onlookers were locals...and the school that their kids went to...well...the county was gonna hafta come up with another option...

Something good seems to come out of bad things...what I noticed was how the community came together to clean up and try to cover up damaged houses and streets. It was like a disaster party of sorts...people brought water, food, grills, tarps, chainsaws, ropes, chains, trucks, people to help...activity was everywhere...to drive through it was like a horror show and tailgate party all rolled up into one.

If you are ever feeling like people are only self-interested...all that needs to happen is one event like that to set you straight.

A number of buses got trashed...and any cupholders they may have had...crying shame...

There are some areas somewhere near us that seem to have a large number of tornadoes. We have been fortunate about not having anything big enough for classification as a tornado.

Only real scare I have ever had involving a tornado was the big one that hit Joplin Missouri in 2011. My sister was living there at the time. She was caught in her car in front of her house when it hit, her house was the only one for several blocks around it that took almost no damage. All it got was a couple broken windows and some missing shingles, the houses on both sides of it were a total loss.

Her and my niece had no injuries either. The worst part of the situation was that we heard about it on the radio but with the power out no one could get a call in or out so it was several hours before we knew anything. The lord was definitely protecting them that day.

I remember seeing that one on the news. It was bad. I've seen a couple of tornados. I wrecked my first 1985 F250 while driving home after trying to chase one down to see it. After that, I don't care if I see any more or not. I just lost interest. That truck didn't have any cup holders, but the engine, transmission, and transfer case went into my Bronco which had the cup holders molded into the center console.

No tornados to speak of, but definitely sat through some hurricanes! In 94-95ish the eye of hurricane Erin went over Milton where I lived. The wind was blowing really hard one way and we sat in the house and watched the pine trees bend over.......then it just stopped....... and we ran outside RESECURED everything, moved my older brothers 69 long bed which probably had stuff all over the floorboard in place of cupholders and then ran back into the house just before the wind started blowing the other direction even harder. Hurricane Ivan was wild because it was at night and the power was off........ you couldn't see a cupholder even if you had one. I always wondered where I sat my drink down that night. We went out the next day and the interstate bridge was GONE!!!! And there was the semi truck hanging off the bridge because some dude tried to drive thru it, he died of course, which thing is sad.

It almost feels out of place to talk about it now , but here’s the beginning of my attempt to make a cup holder mount like the one at the start of this thread:

I made it out of 2 pieces because I’m using some 14ga scrap I have laying around. They’ll get welded together at 90 degrees along the joint. The “L” shaped piece goes under the shifter boot, and the 6 little dots on the other piece will be holes for mounting the cup holder. It’s angled because the tunnel on the truck is sloped about 15 degrees. This is the cup holder I bought a while back and hadn’t figured out where to mount it:

I’ll be honest though, if I didn’t already have the cup holder and the scrap metal I’d be buying the one Nero posted!

In my opinion...it feels JUST right to talk about this...by all means...give me (us) something for inspiration...that looks like a pretty spiffy project...

It outta be pretty useful when you have it installed...

I gotta ask...are you using vise-grips..?

I'm gonna assume you are...

Are they certified original or authorized partnered up with Irwin Vise-grips...?

It's gonna make a difference on how the thing turns out, ya know....

Good cupholders deserve to be built with good tools...don'cha know...

Any ole dead fish can float down stream and wind up in a pile of coke bottles and stuff that fell out of a school bus window that @XOLATEM was riding in, but it takes a brave living fish to utilize some good pieces of scrap steel that @1mouse3 could use to patch his floor boards to actually make a cupholder! Cheers!!!

And you kept silent after all of these years....eventually this vignet was de-classified....and you could talk about it freely...the names were changed to protect the innocent...

On a more serious note...I hafta observe.....

It is times like that that give you strength and inspiration that you are being kept alive for a higher purpose...
