As posted already take a bunch of pictures if possible. Plus posting them here will make giving answers a lot easier. If you happen to use a real digital camera and not a smart phone (although smart phones may have this setting now too). Dont hesitate to use the macro setting. It's really hard to judge what that "little crack or notch there in kind of the center of the picture" is when its incredibly blurry because the picture taker (no not the cops) didn't set their camera to macro. Good luck with the work and just take your time with things.
