Haven't been around for a while, though I still have my bought-nearly-new '86. Still runs like a top, though rust has taken more of the body. I come in and lurk occasionally. Anyway, I did another article for Diesel World on the 6.9. The paper version was in the July 2021 issue but the online...
About a year ago, the float on my front tank sank. It wasn't the original one but it was probably a decade or more old. That time, it was easy to find the right float but this time was a bit tough. I got one at LMC Truck. Two actually, because my late '80s Ford tractor uses the same one and they...
Two month ago, the inside mirror fell off. The button came off the glass. Not the original one, as the windshield was replaced in 2002.
Try1- Went out and bought one of the easily obtained Permatex mirror adhesive kits. Reglued the button per instros. Went back a day later to install the...
Some years ago, 2006 to be exact, the OE style water separator on my '86 failed (again) so I went to an alternative, the Stanadyne Fuel Minder 100 (google it). It's a 30 micron primary filter that is also a water separator. The version I got came with a water bowl in the bottom but not all of...
Hi Guys,
Just wanted to FYI you a little late (I didn't know until last week) that my Ford IDI history story was FINALLY published... only abut two years later than I would have wanted. It's not in Diesel World as planned but in the same publishers sister magazine Ultimate Diesel Builder's...
I finally found some wide steel wheels for my old '86 that will carry my stainless steel hubcaps for that o-so-retro look. Before I paint them, I wanted to consider what the original color was. The earliest pics I have of my XL truck, the wheels were argent and that's what I remember (but it's...
Any opinions. The upper hinge on the driver's door is getting loosy-goosy and I see LMC truck has both. I'm not really clear on what the hinge kit has in it?
The new valve from Ford I installed just last year failed on my '86. Thought it was the sender on the front tank. Fortunately, it's just within the Ford 12/12 warranty so I'm getting a new one. Dang near ran out of fuel. Thought the tank had switched from front to rear... but noooo. Tank doesn't...
Are the front and rear sending units the same? My front one just went bad and the one Ford parts site I looked at shows only one part... and doesn't list a part number. Been so long since I looked at mine that I CRS.
As I said, there were a few pics that were cut from the article. I won't get into trouble posting them here, along with the captions, so here they are. I'm really busy now and havne't been able to be here much... but I will tell you that the "IDI-ID" story, which is a history piece on the Ford...
Wanted to see how the oil was faring in my 6.9L diesel 2K after an overhaul. It was mostly upper end work, but I replace the rings, pistons (still std. bore) and bearings because I got them for free ( : < ). I am running a bypass system with a 10 um element (I have previously stated 5 um but...
I need to ID the owner of this truck... real name not site handle... and year of this truck, please, from the summer Rally.
Also, this one has the "Turbo Diesel" badge under the F250 badge on the fenders and that appears to be normal for a IDIT, but I have read that the NA OBS diesels DID NOT...
Thought you might like to see some vintage Banks material, the top one from '86 (the first gen unit) and the others from 1990 (second gen with the revised airbox). Both are pre-Sidewinder and were non-wastegated turbos. PS- That applies to the Ford. The GM unit started as a Sidewinder and likely...
Been researching the origins and history of the 6.9L and ran across something you might like to see. It's an image of an early IH IDI V8 diesel on a dyno and it appeared in a March, 1982 an industry news story in Four Wheeler magazine that talked about the upcoming diesel war between Ford and...
I thought I had a copy of the press release for the intro of the '83 Ford diesel, which was in 1982, but I can't find it. Does anyone have one and can tell me the month?
I am now obsessed with wanting to know the correct tailgate lettering color on the '80-86 trucks. So if you have an original '80-86 truck, please chime in with the year of the truck, what color the letters were painted originally, along with the original color of the truck and interior color...
After our conversation a couple of weeks ago, I finally got around to reconnecting my Racor bypass oil filtration system using the port Justin (cdx825) told me about at the rally. I removed the AC compressor a slid it out of the way. The plug came out easy. I installed the 90 degree JIC fitting...
I was given a great tip at the rally for installing the return line for my bypass system. At the front of the driver's head, near the deck, is an Allen head plug. This apparently feeds into the head oil drain passages. Before I hook my return into this, I wanted to know whether this is a place...
Been looking in the books for old style stamped steel wheels but wider than the stock 6x16 rims that came on my truck. Before they went to the styled steel wheels, it looks like they had some 7x16 rims with the right offset. Does anyone know if there ever was anything wider 7.5x16 or ideally...
Just wanted to say thanks for all the fine hospitality at the IDI rally at Tecumseh. Wonderful group of people there and mighty fine trucks (read that as MIGHTY and FINE!). For a Photog, it was what's called a "target rich environment." I'll say it again, the offer to come down here and help...
Anybody have a fix for a droopy headliner? The cover is beginning to seperate from the foam backing on my '86. It's holing tight at the edges, so I can't just sneak in there with contact cement. I see LMC truck has a replacemetn headliner for '87-up trucks but I'd guess it won't fit my '86.
