Thanks Josh. I desperately want a low geared reverse as I have a trailer that I tow a bobcat and a CAT mini excavator on. This reverse gearing ratio I have is not very desirable.

You don't happen to have a driveshaft parking brake, do you? I know some F-superduty(f-450)'s came with them. The neat thing about that is that it uses a 4x4 transmission, so the parking brake could be replaced with a transfer case.
A Transfer case, of course, gives you a low range. You don't need the front axle or anything, just the case itself.

Those trucks had rear disc brakes, so if he did the transfer case thing (good idea) he would lose his parking brake (deal breaker where I live with inspections). That is, if his truck has rear discs.

This late 91 (titled as a 92) has drum brakes and a Ford differential. I saw a transmission with that disk parking brake from a F450 for sale on ebay or craigs list a few months ago but sold quickly.
I read on our forum about the few ZF5's with a low geared reverse but didn't understand the advantage till I started hauling equipment around with a large trailer.

Also, there are 10 leafsprings I counted per each side plus 4 more auxillary springs on top with a spacer between the 10 and 4 as usual. I suppose standard for a flatbed. The vin sticker says incomplete so I assume the truck was completed by a third party.

sounds like you own a commercial chassis F350 truck. if you can't find a PSD ZF5(S47) trans, you next best bet is putting in a 4wd Zf5(S42) and haning a transfer case behind it. with the shift linkage hooked up and giving you the option of going to 4LO and that will help you drop your ratios when needed. :D

Yes, the truck was originally owned by an asphalt company in Fla. Not a smooth ride at all but am used to it now. This truck can tow an immensely large trailer no problem with heavy tongue weight.
I was very impressed by the smooth handling this truck has when loaded down.
Well the hunt is on for that transmission.
Have been quoted $1800 for a total rebuild, using a master rebuild kit.
The price appears to always be in that range from several sources I checked with. Would rebuild it myself, but just finding the time and a place to do it isn't going to happen till summer or fall.

Also, this frame underneath has on both sides a long strap riveted to the bottom to add rigidity. Has anyone seen that before?
Just went out and counted the leaf springs, yep, 10 on bottom plus 4 more auxillary springs. (to ensure that smooth floating ride) Why go see a back surgeon to fuse your bad vertebrae? I can rent you this truck for a small fration of the cost of surgery and guarantee this ride will fuse your whole spine in one day.
The transmission I have is a Zf5s42, is there any advatage to having an s47?

outside of the deeper reverse, no. 4x4 s42's can be found much easier compared to a S47. as a result, it should be a little cheaper to acquire a 4x4 s42 and transfer case since there were more F250's and F350's with the same trans.

I prefer the 42 ratios with a tcase. The 47 is supposed to be a touch stronger.

S42 ratios:
4.14, 2.37, 1.42, 1.00, 0.77, (R)3.79

S47 ratios:
5.08, 2.60, 1.53, 1.00, 0.77, (R)4.66

Yes, the f350 dump truck I worked on had that beefed up frame. Since you have a cab and chassis truck, your truck is completely oddball from the cab rearward compared to a regular dually pickup. The frame is more narrow, the rearend housing is more narrow, you have a large stack of leafs in the rear but they are narrow also. A pickup bed will not fit on your frame if you ever had that notion.

The little f350 dump I worked on was 4x4 also. If you take the other guys advice and install a tranny and transfer case, then you will 1/2 of the way to 4x4. Later on you could swap the front axle and have 4x4, though I am not sure what your front suspension looks like now. Does it have leaf springs or coils up front?
