It happened when a stray morter instead of going up changed coarse and flew straight across the field into the birthday boys legs. Actually bounced off both legs and went between the row of trucks and blew up a lovely shade of purple with white tips. John with his lightening reflexes jumps off the truck to get his son and in doing so boogered up his knee. It happened so fast it was over before anyone could really react, I was two trucks over and it was a little surreal to see. It was just a freak thing the morter tube was still pointed upward from what I heard.
Of coarse it could just have been Darrin playing rocket man from his crazy jealousy of all the beautiful IDI powered trucks around his cummins.

yea, what Jred, errr Subway said. lol Was sitting on the tailgate when the firework went sideways instead of up. As the firework hit my left leg, I was jumping down off the tailgate to protect my 10 yr old , who was sitting in a chair between mine and Corey's truck. As I watched the firework ignoite my rt knee collasped and I couldnt stand back up. Thankfully, everyone was ok. Except for me. lol It could have been much worse. A child could have been it in the face, or lost an eye, or worse.
Yeiks!, Considering what happened there, you were dang lucky that you walked away with just that and nobody/ nothing else hurt . I sure hope you get to healing up quick . That kind of stuff is no fun.

Forgive me, but seeing that in his Avatar, took me 20 minutes to stop laughing, just struck me funny as hell.
I know the pain of a knee injury. Fell on my right knee off a second step 16" Hi on too concrete floor, cracked the knee cap, swelled like a balloon. After $17,000 Dr. bill was good as new, only $876 to suck a quart of the fluid off it. Then a fitted cushioned knee cap guard for only $$350, didn't work too good, so a leg brace for only $$450, wasn't worth a damn to walk, so a custom fitted full leg brace from crotch to foot for only $4000, then I had too re-work that to bend 15 degrees so I could walk, still couldn't drive, so I quit wearing it. Only good thing about all this was when the Girl fitting them, is when Her hand got really really close up in the crotch. Should of had a Speedo on. ;p

Ouch!! I dont think Im that bad. X-ray showed no broken bones. So thats a good thing. I did have to wear a knee imobilizer that was fitted at the hospital the night of the injury. The male nurse that fitted it said he was "really **** about the fit" lol Then he fitted a second brace that he thought worked better. My gf was helping him by hiking my shorts up as high as possible. This was done after he just got done telling us that he took a trip to Hershey with his "friend". lol Ron, Michelle, and myself couldn't stop laughing. It was quite a funny night and we weren't even drunk!! lol

If that was the case, I would not have aimed for his truck, I sold it to him!
I was in charge of the fireworks display, and I asked Heath to help out as he has very impressive credentials in this field. It was a 2'x2'x2' box of 12 mortars, you set it on the ground, light one fuse and they start popping out one by one. It was an impressive display, and I cant imagine what it looked like coming right at ya! We had them sitting on a board instead of the grass. The box was probably about 3/4 of the way through the series, when one of the mortars appeared to go out sideways. I saw it out of the corner of my eye as it was headed towards the back of Johns truck. I continued to watch the rest of the morters all go straight up without incident, then headed towards target area.
Then we went back and checked the box, and there were no holes out of the side, There was no way for it to tip over, let alone for one round, then right itself again. The only thing we could figure is that when they pop through the top of the box, some of the shrapnel all piled up on that one morter, deflecting it as it exerted the box.
It was a scary moment indeed, and as stated could have been a whole lot worse.
Another thing to remember is that Johns Tailgate is not your average height, He had a long way to jump off in a hurry as his truck sits up pretty high.

In all of my 10 plus years of putting on Fireworks Displays like this one, and Heaths many years as well, We have never seen something like this happen.
I tend to think that Heath and I had the most fun that night,..It was a lot of fun blowing stuff up,, Just wish that we could get that one back for ya John, I really do.

The show was good, except for 1 firework. lol.
I wish you could take that one back also, but out of every bad thing, comes some good. Not sure what it is, yet, but Im sure there will be some kind of benefit.

Bummer!! Well, if it makes you feel any better, the San Diego Bay, 4 barge, computer controlled fireworks display didn't go so well either. I suppose, this was nothing compared to torn knee caps, but, the computer controlling the synchronization totally effed up! The planned 20 minute showed blew up in 15 seconds!!!!! All of them basically went off all at once. Pretty darned impressive.
That said, sorry you received a direct hit from a stray. Hope you'll do way better, gad the kids are safe... but it makes for a good read at your expense!
