Long time forum visitor but first time poster. Been into IDIs since early high school.

Have been trying to get this truck bought since before I turned 16. It had been parked 20-25 years and I finally managed to snag it although it is in worse condition now. Started with just seeing if it would start/run/drive. Managed to get it to spin over after a new set of batteries and a fair amount of banging on the starter. Got solid fuel flow up to the IP and out the return but the IP never would pump to the injectors. Voltage and resistance on the shutoff coil showed it to be good. Pulled the IP and it is at R&D in Wyoming being rebuilt right now. I will be installing a set of their new injectors and their aluminum return rails when the pump comes back.

Removed the flatbed that was actually for a DRW truck and just didn't fit right. It also needs a floor and was welded to the frame. I am selling the bed and will install a properly fitted skirted bed once all the other stuff is done. Rear brakes were seized and would not give up-ended up using a sledge hammer to break and remove the rear drums for now. Doesn't need brakes since it wont run but I need to be able to roll it around.

Ordered a 38 gallon tank since the condition of both tanks was less than ideal after sitting so long. FSV was already bypassed and rear tank wasn't even in use. Water separator is not on the truck either. I plan to run new fuel lines and mount filters on the frame, possibly the R&D setup. Not sure yet.

Cab had a heavy mold smell and I found that the rear side windows have been leaking for some time. Long enough that the carpet is done for and the floor pans and rockers under the side windows are gone. Bought another cab missing it's historical document to cut the repair pieces I need out of. The floor will get painted and sound deadening installed and then I will switch to a vinyl mat rather than going back to carpet. At some point I'll have the seats recovered as original as possible as it gets closer to being road ready.

I purchased a 2006 F-250 frame and axles and have started working through them to swap both. New brakes, ball joints, U joints, grease adapters for the hubs, tie rods, etc. I am using the 2006 rear springs and will drill out the 86 hangars to accept the 06 hardware. For the front I think I'll order the Blowing Diesel swap kit. It's definitely an expense over using the stock 06 parts but I like the looks better and it should be easier to install. Also on the list is a ZF5 swap but I'm still gathering parts for that. It is a 2wd automatic truck so there's going to be a fair amount of stuff to find. I did score a ZF5 crossmember with the parts cab mentioned earlier.

These are the easiest ones to do. When they sit this long your expectations are(should be) low so finding problem after problem isn’t as big of a deal. I’ll say had this been a running driving truck I probably wouldn’t axle swap it. But given the age of literally every wear item and having to touch most of the trucks systems anyway it seemed logical.

The 06 rear axle went in today. Took about 3 hours. The shackle bolts in the 86 frame had to be cut out but that was the only real problem I encountered. The rear hangar holes get drilled out to 5/8” to use the 06 bolts and the front ones will have to be drilled out too but I haven’t measured to be certain what size yet. For now I threw it together with the 86 bolts but they are slightly loose in the spring eye. The 06 sway bar links used the factory holes in the 86 frame. I will use 06 shocks but I need to find a lower right side mount to put on the left side. That will orient the left shock forward and should clear the sway bar similar to how the old axle was. The emergency brake cables will take some figuring as well as the load proportioning valve bracket. Otherwise it went to plan 100%. It’s crazy how modular some of this stuff is even though they are 2 decades apart.

I’ll have to upload the photos later. Keep getting errors.
