Everyone wants to use a PSD turbo since they are plentiful and cheap (due to PSD owners upgrading turbos). But by the time you fabricate everything else to make it work you are ahead using the proper unit.

IDI turbo setups are readily available new, all it takes is money.

I agree with Mr. Roboto...the proper unit is best...thats what I'm doing...but I can't afford to have the truck down days weeks, months? and I'm not a very good fabricator. I was just saying if you had those skills or access to someone who did who would do it cheap for you...its an idea when you could just rob the turbo off a complete PSD engine for no cost. Robbing the top end off a factory turbo motor is bad economics. They are not all that common and they are expensive. The ones that are junked, often the turbos get sold by the junkyard or sold on ebay. Its a good choice for a proper fitting turbo but would probably cost about the same as a comparable Banks or ATS used system. If you do find a factory turbo, ditch the squished downpipe and get a real one. They are still available from ATS, and maybe elsewhere.

I'll keep my eyes open for a factory IDI turbo setup....I know where there is a 1994 F250 4x4 for $1000, blown headgaskets on the 7.3 and a rebuilt 5spd in it. Not sure if it's a 7.3T IDI or not? Charged my A/C today with 134A, seems to be working good. It was really hot today but once I started rolling it got nice and cool.

Does anyone make a cold air intake to fit the IDI??? or is there a good backyard intake idea everyone is using? I'm going to put the 3.5" exhaust from the 96 F350 on my 91 as soon as I get a chance.

A common N/A mod for better air is the "Ghost Tube" which is one of these. You just have to drill the hole for our larger bolt, and put a bigger air cleaner on it when the first one gets dirty too fast.

hmmm, gonna have to try an ebay search for one of those...that's exactly what I was going to try to make just already made. Too cheap to just shell out the money and buy one there, all I really want is the part that bolts on to the intake manifold.

Looks like ebay units run around $40 shipped. Wish I could just buy the filter housing replacement as I could come up with my own piping and filter. I may just buy one anyways...unless someone makes something up, then I'm all ears :D

I am into Caprice/Impalas, and there is a CAI mod for the old TBI equipped engines using a Cadillac 4.9 intake. I am curious to see if it fits the intake on the IDI. I have one in the Garage, I will try to get around to seeing if it fits...

LINK to a writup for Caprice.

If it does let us know and take some measurements too if possible.

Thank You.

Just looked on ebay for intake kits for a 2000 Dodge 1500 like is in Mel's link. Most of 'em were like $18.99 with like $22 shipping :backoff

I'm wondering if there's a Fernco elbow or PVC elbow that would work using the stock bolt to hold it down? I'll have to look some more.

Deanstud the fourbarrel carb stuff is the same as the idi intake so the tbi should be the same diameter. I have used the air cleaner gaskets all around, same same.

I'd be afraid the fernco would get sucked in? I'll go see my friend that has a salvage yard and see what i can find too! as for the soup bowl... oops wrong one...
