In TN it all depends on what type of tags you want.

Antique tags run about $55 for a permanent registration. You never have to renew it, there is no emissions testing, but your only allowed to drive on weekends, holidays, and parades or shows.

Personal tags vary from county to county, and certain counties have emissions testing. This is what I have, and renewal for me should be about $85 plus $9 for emissions testing.

Commercial plates vary by weight class. Bu for instance H4 which is up to 26k lbs GCWR run about $550/ year plus $9 emissions test if the trucks GVWR is under 10,500 lbs.

Sales tax has to be paid with the first years registration if it was a purchased from another individual. Dealers have to collect sales tax at the time of purchase. Usually works out to about 8%.

The funny thing to me is that my 30 year old diesel truck has to get emissions tested, but I have a fleet of late model one ton gas powered trucks at work, all of which are exempt due to GVWR. The emissions testing sites don’t even have a way to test my truck. When I ran my truck through, the girl working there insisted that every vehicle has an obd2 port. She finally got her manager he took one quick look at my truck, took my $9 and handed me a piece of paper with a smiley face on it.

Even California doesn't emission test IDIs, because diesels kept getting kicked down the road for so long. I think diesels didn't start needing it until year model 1997? Gas autos started in 1975! Yep, cars 1975 and newer STILL need emissions testing in California. Kind of silly to go back that far but I guess they figure so few are on the road, the ones that are need to be kept up to spec. 1974 and older don't.

Washington state is similar on diesels, but gassers quit needing it after the get to something like 25 years old.

Except Kitsap county, probably because of the bases there, does not require any inspection at all.

Oh yeah maybe the other rural countries on the east side of the mountains don't either. I was in Piece County (Tacoma) so yeah I was in the SeaTac region.

I think I was paying $35 a year, but I got personalized plates last year which cost an extra $15 per year to keep so it'll go up to $50 a year now.

Indiana goes by initial value also and then reduces over the next several years to the minimum it will be. I think I am there by age on all of mine. There is also weight figured in on a "truck". So my 3 trucks

2003 Excursion - $125.35
2011 Supercrew - $106.35
2011 RC Longbed - $91.35

Then I still have the records on my old 88 F-250 - $134.35

In Illinois (where my parents live) it is a flat rate, no matter what the vehicle. Truck plates have different costs depending on weight class (B,C,D) but I think passenger cars, SUV's an B Trucks are $110 (unless they have raised that like everything else)

My county in TN is $76.50/year for a standard tag. Antique tags are something like a $35 1-time fee. Been a couple years since I put the antique tag on my '67 Mustang, so I can't remember it to the cent.

I checked the registration from 2015 on.
2015 $61
2018 $45
2019 $64
2020 $64

This is for my 86 F250.

Not sure what`s up with the drop to 45 that one year.

My 22ft flatbed car trailer is $49 for 2 years.

Back in 81 my 67 VW was $13 in komifornia. Imagine that?

I believe WA dropped all testing recently. It was more or less just puget sound area, Clark county, spokane, and maybe tri cities as far as I know. Never had to test anything in Cowlitz when I lived there. Now in Portland I have to test everything but the diesel pickup. Registration is a little cheaper though and every other year.

Last year it was $240, this year it was $298. For comparison, my 2012 VW was $280 last year when I bought it and $230 this year. The "weight fee" on my IDI goes up every year.

At least CA uses the weight on the pink slip, not the actual vehicle weight. My truck weighs 7400 pounds, but the title says 5080... just enough to get it up in to that higher bracket and add an extra $160 to the bill.

Passenger and B is now $151 where C is $218, they went up in cost last year.

NY my 1994 E350 ambulance was $274.50 which I believe is good for two years..
then another $40 for the annual vehicle inspection..
BUT since it is over 25 years old, no need to have emission tested.
