Garbage mechanic sent me some pics of the problem with the parking brake and new brake shoes.

I'll post them here, along with his comments on them. (I'll put his comments below the pics.) Then he can come in and answer questions, or make further comments, etc.

I think I'll post one picture per post here, so they can be individually singled out in responses.

There are 6 pics, so if you would, please wait until they are all posted, before responding.

1. my first discovery of "why doesn't the park brake hold, and why does it stick and drag?"

2. This one shows the actuator stuck in the applied position due to climbing over the top of the rear shoe because there is metal missing from the shoe in critical spots. The front shoe is applied and rear shoe not, application lever has gone to the end of its stroke due to this.

3. with the lever and actuator assembly removed one can see that on the top right the actuator climbed over the shoe and left a huge burr. On the bottom left the contact surface for the actuator should be vertical not angled away toward the front

4. slightly out of focus...…...here we can see what a perfect shoe would look like. A little build up with the MIG plus a little grinding and filing....better than new.

5. now we have complete and full contact from actuator to shoe with no lost motion but not holding shoe off the anchor pin either. Cant see it but same thing on the bottom front.

That's the pics and comments, all done.

In my opinion... It looks like somewhere along the way, a "manufacturer" took those pieces off of some old worn shoes, and used them as templates for the new pieces.

With the expected consequences...

When that first came up a few years back I went through stock from every brake shoe mfg and found only the ones I had removed from my truck were made correctly. Economics has made it cheaper to buy new steel than collect, transport clean and reuse the cores. Appearently there is one mfg making all the steel.

Thanks for posting, I've been having some similar problems. Anyone know of a brand with no issues?

I installed a set of Bosch shoes this days off, and seem to function flawlessly. But, I wish I had seen this post a couple days back for comparison! Even though they are marketed and boxed by Bosch, they were made in China. New wheel cylinders, spring set and adjusters and no more lock up, and the park brake holds. Wonders never cease... I am very happy I was able to re-use my drums after cutting them. Nice to see that FoMoCo stamped on them. We are fortunate out here in the PNW that stuff doesn't rot away as it does to the east. Makes doing these jobs so much easier.
