Would WMO work better if it was pre-heated?

I still feel that the oil viscosity improvers will add thickness as it heats up. Thats what they do when the motor oil heats up but... I do recall its written that the oil has the "protection" of a heavier oil as it heats up. Yes... I do see the point of cold oil versas hot oil on the gauge. So is the advertising wrong or does the viscosity improver polymers actually increase the weight od the oil as it heats up or just the protection improves.

Maybe it does thicken as advertised when hot, but just maybe it would be a lot thinner if it did not. Just something to think about......

viscosity improvers DO NOT make oil thikcer as it heats up. They just prevent it from getting as thin as it owuld without the viscosity imporvers. They make it act like a heavier oil without viscosity improvers would act at a high temp.
another example viscosity measure 1-10 10 being lightest thinnest oil 1 being thickest

regular oil cold is 3 hot is 8
oil w/viscosity improvers cold 3 hot 6
heavy oil no viscosity improver cold 1 hot 6

so the viscosity improvers make your lighter oil act like a heavier oil at high temps while retaining lighter oil charecteristics col.

That's what they do. It doesn't thicken the oil at high temps it just prevents itfrom thining out as much as it would normally. clear?

well the proof is in the oil pressure gauge otherwise the oil pressure would stay the same as the engine warmed up if the viscosity stayed the same. What happens the oil gets thinner when its warm so it flows past the baring easier thus losing oil pressure. Go get an oil temp gauge and do some hauling and watch your oil temp and pressure on a loooong hill. The temperature will rise and the pressure will drop a bit


Also have you ever notices its allot easier to change the oil on a warm engine then one that's cold, notice how the oil flows out quick and easly on a warm engine where the cold engine it seems to be allot slower and takes allot more time

It is my understanding that the reason you would run you WMO though a heat exchanger before the ip is to present 180*-190* oil to be burned, hot oil produces less carbon build up in the combustion chamber. At least that's what the big boys tell me. But then again when I was a kid they were mostly wrong about ***, so who knows? Anybody have any thought about it?

Well that's the other side of the coin, the hotter the oil the thinner it is. So the easer it is for the injector to attomize the fuel better and produce a finer spray thus providing a more compleet burn

Thank you for putting this in terms folks can understand,So many people have gone on BITOG and have filled their heads with all kinds of gobbelty **** that they think they are experts on oil and it drives me nuts.
You are correct a 15w-40 oil is NOT a 40, but in fact it is a 15 wt oil, with the film strength of a 40 wt at operating temp, but in no way is it as thick as a 40 wt at operating temp, The 40 wt rating has to do with it's ability to keep internal parts separated from each other , it has nothing to do with a thickness test.
In the same way, a 5w-30 is not a 30 wt, but it is in fact a 5 wt oil with the film strength of a 30 wt at operating temp, which is yet another reason I've been against their usage in this size engine except in extreme arctic conditions, it's simply too light an oil

A 15w-40 starts out heavy when cold but thins out when at operating temp. A 5w-30 starts out fairly thick at cold and gets almost watery feeling at operating temp. A 0w-20 or 0w-30 will start out fairly fluid and get slicker than snot at operating temp

If you are going to try to burn any of this stuff in your fuel tank it is going to behave about the same, but keep in mind when you start mixing viscosity grades and brands , funny things can start happening in the chemistry when you get that many different brands going, that's a lot of different additive bases mixing trying to do their thing, but all in all it should thin down as it heats up.

Viscosity does not relate to thick or thin. It is the resistance to flow. Low viscosity, less resistance to flow. High viscosity, high resistance to flow.
