Have you got studs and nuts or hex head bolts? Have you got the rubber gaskets or cork? Either way just snug them up so the gasket don't crush (squeeze out) the gasket.

... well, I've got a combination of studs/nuts and bolts on both valve covers. I'm using FELPRO rubber gaskets. But what I was really talking about is when you double nut the stud and screw it down into the head... is there a recommended amount of torque? But thanks for the tip on tightening... that helps.

Actually, installing studs requires no torque values at all. All you want to do is thread them in as far as they will go and still be useable. If you are worried about them unscrewing later when trying to remove nuts, just use some red loctite.

If you torque studs into a blind hole, you are forcing threaded material into an unthreaded area at the bottom of the hole. Not good. the result is ruined threads on the stud, and probably ruined threads in the threaded hole if you ever try to remove the stud.
