Im not sure which transmission I have (T-18 or T-19 in my 83 F-350)

What fluid is recomended for this?

I have heard that some gear oils will damage the synchronizers?

I'm pretty sure streight 80-90wt hypoid gear oil is the lubricant of choice.

Hypoid Gear Oil is the one I have heard is ******* the synchronizers, actually wearing them away. Supposedly it has an additive in it that is harsh on the softer metals used in the older Ford Transmissions. I was just wonderong if anyone else has heard this?

Also, a friend said that the book calls for 50 wt. engine oil???

Well maybe it is not Hypoid. The manual calls for "Standard Transmission Lube", Ford Part Number D8DZ-19C547-A. This is an 80wt. gear oil.

I was going to ask a similar question. My inclination is to use standard 80W-90 mineral based, but not hypoid, or any other weird additives. I've heard some of these guys suggest SAE50 or similar, but I don't know if that's ever a good idea.
