Finally got around to replacing the sacked out I-beam bushings. Have a pit to work out of so it was fairly simple, i didnt even take the wheels off just used some I beam sections across the top of the pit and some bottle jacks, one for the frame on the side i was working and one for the traction beam itself. Everyone said to use a ball joint press, but after fiddle f'n around with it i just put the hammer bit on my .498 shank chicago pneumatic rivet buster (the original Big Nasty) and it knocked out those bushings with some force. Same with putting them back in, One of the cups from the ball joint set and the rivet hammer and they went in smooth as butter.
I am glad i bought all the different bolt size bushings, because i thought i had the bigger bolts on the truck but turned out they were the smaller diameter ones, 1/2 in i think. Hate getting something apart and realizing the part is wrong. The truck is seemingly back in alignment, it looks better up front in turn, goes nice and straight down the road, and i dont hear a peep from the front end going over every single bump in the road. Definitely a win!

The 86 has been starting great the past 5 years with the ZD-1
plugs. Been noticing past month or more she didn`t have the
same old zip starting cold. Yesterday she had a dead hole and
shook pretty good, gave her another glow with the toggle, and
gave the other cylinders more heat and the dead hole got going.

Today dragged out the HF DVM, and it didn`t work. Has a 9V
Battery inside, replace it and all was good.
Set it to 20K Ohms. All showed 0.01 ohms except 2nd and rear
one on the drivers side, which were Zero.

I have some ZD-1 (4 which were on sale) and 8 ZD-28 coming from RA, but to be here tomorrow??
I have a set of Bosch 30034 which are spades, thinking of putting
them in.

Black Dawg mentioned in this thread they are good with manual
control.

They are all changed....Yeah!!!!
Gooped them up with Anti-Seize, put some Dialectrical grease on the connections. Held toggle to count of 8 and she fired right off really smooooooooth.

OH yeh Iam aware of not mixing up parts or brands.
The 6 that ohm`d out ok, I`ll connect them to 12V and
see how the ends light up.

We`ll see how these hold up. I bought these Bosch 30034 plugs a couple years ago, had 14 of them, guess I bought all they had listed. Spade is a little narrower but the connectors went on.
I do need to get an up graded GP harness, 38 years has not been kind to the plastic ends, then few months back when i swapped the new IP, injectors, Hyd. lifters, Push Rods and 7.3 Rockers, When taking off the GP harness, the female piece that goes on the Spade, broke the side off where it is crimped around. Had to solder and splice in a new section of wire and end. Actually that is the best connector of them all....LOL.

Then I was having problems with the Parking Brake assy. not coming all the way up when pulling the handle. Had to hit it a 2nd time.
Gave it a shot of Kroil, and also the spring/lever gizmo on the frame for the rear Brake cables on the left frame rail.
WOW what an improvement.
Later my Wife and I Headed into town (25 miles) to pick up her 2 sewing machines that were getting some repairs. Pull up to a n
intersection and the L/R wheel grabs and skids on the pavement.
Did it at the next 2 lights. HMMM, did the kroil do something?
But did notice over all I did have better braking after using the kroil.

For the past 2 weeks I have been going to jack it up, remove the rear wheels and drums and adjust the Brakes. So maybe this will speed me up a little the check things out....

Edit: no sooner posted this and there was fedex with my 8 ZD 28 GP`s. Says Made in Germany on bag but not on plug, or Beru. Has a sticker from ford with part #s. and not a real hole in Bags but a round circle like it was punched but not all the way through.

As long as you don't mix the two types. I'm sure you already know that.

OH yeh Iam aware of not mixing up parts or brands.
This was mostly for new people who might read this and not realize that there's a HUGE difference between the two.
Spade is a little narrower but the connectors went on.
That's because they're for the GM 6.2/6.5. They do use a narrower spade so it was perfectly normal.

I prefer the actual load test.
Picked up a cheap $20 multimeter with clamp amp probe that does Ac and DC amps.
The relay output brown wires showed a combined 4 amp load, replaced all 8, and then got 97 amps with gp live.
It's easier to check with a van, just pull the cowling out.
On a truck you can take a remote start pushbutton, attach one side to the white terminal, and the other side to any frame, body, or engine part that's bolted in place.
The gp relay coil won't take more than a couple amps to hold.
I have one of those HF red meters too, not going to toss it, but the new one has earned a sacred spot in the roll away.
It's without doubt the most useful multimeter I've ever owned for automotive troubleshooting.
On DC amp mode it even displays the direction the current is flowing.

I have a spot out back where I throw all my scrap metal, and
it has been piling up the past few years. yesterday I loaded up all the Ferus metal and since I was going to Carson City anyway to go
out to my tire guy. 1/4 mile up the road is the recycler.

Had 560lbs, and also 9 ballasts out of old Florescent lights I took apart. Steel $0.25 lb, and the ballasts $0.05 lb....@ 50lbs.
WOW $16.50.
I would have not made a special trip to take it there but was going anyway. The guy at the recycler said price of steel dropped $30
a ton in Oct....OH that is this month..or did he mean last Oct...?
OH well, is what it is.

Then Picked up 2 wheels from my 82 Mercedes I dropped off couple
days ago when I was out there. Dang, the 14" tires are getting harder to find. Cooper I guess quit making them which I usually
use, and said Falcon is probably only one his Distributer carries.
185/70R/14 and has a 80K mile warranty.

It might have been this month. When I hauled off what was left of Scrappy last May, It was $100/ton.

You might have to resort to buying them online and having them mounted.
Picture of the end of Scrappy for reference.

Not today, but over the past two weeks I've pulled the trans and t-case for a rebuild. I've never done either before, so it's been quite the learning experience! Fun, but long, too.
I've owned this pickup for 18 years and 1st, 3rd and reverse syncros were all pretty washed when I got it. Thank God for Redline MTL, because it's some amazing 5-speed juice. (In fact I assumed 1st and R weren't synchronized all this time because they always chattered).

Also PSA for ZF5 owners:
Get good SKF pilot and throw out bearings when you get a LuK kit. I used the stock stuff and my pilot bearing was literally dust. The TOB squeaked but turned still; however you can see the damage it's done to my clutch fork:

It's a huge upgrade in quality!

Happy wrenching!

I took off of work early today. I drove over to my garage. I put together me harbor Freight cherry picker, which took ENTIRELY too long for some reason. Then I hooked onto my trailer to bring the load of firewood back home. Finally, I took my folding ladder out of the bed and cleaned out the guttering over my back door before it starts raining tonight. I've been lazy enough that I didn't even unload the trailer this summer. In fact, I'm so lazy that I just leave my Halloween decorations laying around the house all year long.
