Out of habit, I back into my driveway. When I walk the two blocks between work and home, I walk between the passenger's side and the house. I had a little W T F? moment when I went to open the driver's door after lunch. We had some storms roll through today. It could have happened this morning or even last night. So I got to buy a replacement mirror today.
I was traveling for two weeks out East last month. Came home and asked my wife and son when someone ripped the mirror off my drivers door? (I park on a pretty busy street.) They looked confused and said we did not notice. FYI they both drive by my truck generally twice a day. Fortunately the mirrow was laying on the street next to the truck, did not get run over, and the mirror was not broken.
I have the older style tow mirrors with the multiple bars that hook to the door that swing out and flip for towing and swing in and flip for driving. When I bought the truck they were rusted in towing mode. I tried to loosen the bolt on the drivers door mirror arm with a impact gun. (It is a IR Titanium, no slacker.) I also tried swinging them with vise grips. (Was hoping it was not too tight.) No such luck so I figured they could just stay in tow mode before I broke them.
Well over the last 4 years that has not worked out so good. The last two times that side got hit it just shattered the mirrow. (Makes me wonder what happen to their plastic mirrors?) It did not do much to the frame. So I bought replacement mirror's at O'Rielleys. They do not work on my truck, but are the same size. So I carefully pulled the mirror and seal out and put back on mine. It took me three tries the first time (Cracked the first two.) before I got the third one in. ($65 later, I could have bought a new one for my truck.) and two times the second time to get one in. ($42.00) So this was the third time someone took my drivers side out, but this time they knocked the mirror and arm clear off the bracket.
Unfortunately this A-Hole did not leave a note and offer to fix his/her mistake. (FYI Amazon was nice enought last time to leave a note and pay for the mirror replacement and a little extra for my time.) So this time since the mirror was off, the bolt stuck in the arm, I drilled and extracted the bolt. I went stainless this time, and added a little anti-seize for fun. Now my mirrors will stay in drive mode unless towing. We will see if I have any better luck going forward.
I have this style.
